Sloppiness

There is a fundamental difference between such scientific controversies and what simply can be called scientific fraud, i.e., deliberate falsification or fudging of data. Sloppy experimental work or data keeping can also lead to questionable or incorrect conclusions, and, although these violate established scientific standards and must be corrected (as they will), they do not necessarily represent deliberate fraud. In all this, the professor has a strict personal responsibility. As he/she is getting most of the recognition for the accomplishment of the research, it is only natural that he/she must also shoulder the responsibility for any mistakes, errors, or even falsifications. It is not accepta-... [Pg.249]

The main example presented will be the alkaline-hypohalite method as it is the easiest to acquire the necessary chemicals. It Is of interest to note that the alkaline-halide method is much easier to perform, process- wise, in that it is more forgiving of sloppy technique. [Pg.260]

Description of class Wet feed is granular and damp but not sticky or muddy and dries to granular meal Wet feed is pasty, muddy, or sloppy product is mostly hard pellets Wet feed is crumbly and friable product is powder with very few lumps... [Pg.1211]

Many people have eontributed their experienee and their wisdom to this workbook. Special thanks goes to Bernard Deppmeier, Andy Driessen, Tim Hume and Jeffrey Johnson at Wavefunction for their development of Spartan View, to Robert Topper (Cooper Union) and Jurgen Schnitker (Wavefunction) for their careful reading of the entire manuscript and to Patrick McDougal (Reed College) for suggesting several problems. As always, Pamela Ohsan is thanked for turning our sloppy manuscript into a finished book. [Pg.311]

The actual electron density is —eP(r), but authors speak about / (r), which is strictly the electron number density, as if it were the same thing. I will follow this sloppy (but common) usage from time to time. [Pg.219]

Being sloppy - for example, not attending meetings and persistently failing to pursue the goals that have been agreed upon. [Pg.163]

Ultimately, Patterson decided, his refuge lay in facts. I was driven to. . . prove my theoretical points unequivocally with solid experimental data. Instead of collecting reams of sloppy data, he chose problems where a few bedrock values would illuminate broad scientific vistas. His theories and chemical analyses would have to be painstakingly perfect in every detail because his thesis was premised on his laboratory s being right and almost every other trace metal laboratory s being wrong. [Pg.179]

Finally, we have been sloppy in associating the flow rate of steam with the heating coil temperature. The proper analysis that includes a heat balance of the heating medium is in the Review Problems. To side step the actual calculations, we have to make a few more assumptions for the valve gain to illustrate what we need to do in reality ... [Pg.92]

We admit to being somewhat sloppy because we are not distinguishing between (Z)- and (E)-polyene subunits. However, the reader will recall from Section VI.A that in Reference 23 it was shown that the difference in enthalpies of formation of (Z)- and (E)-1,3.5-hexalnene was ca 4 kJ mol-1. [Pg.110]

Dysphoria (anxiety, restlessness) predominates, nausea can appear. The drinker has the appearance of a "sloppy drunk."... [Pg.837]

If we measure A U over a thermodynamic cycle and obtain a non-zero value, straightaway we know the cycle is either incomplete (with one or more processes not accounted for) or we employed a sloppy technique while measuring AU. [Pg.85]

SAQ8.19 To return to the example of the Turin Shroud. Suppose a sloppy technique caused the precision of the 14C measurement to decrease from 92.23 per cent to 90 2 percent. Calculate the range of ages for the shroud. [Hint perform two calculations, one for either of the extreme values of percentage.]... [Pg.386]

Online applications are popular with students because they are easier to fill out and less time-consuming to complete. Since you are typing information on a computer, you don t have to worry about your penmanship, or about making errors that can look sloppy when corrected. Before filing your application, you can go back as many times as you wish to correct or edit your answers. Online submission also means no trips to the post office and no postage fees. [Pg.165]

Whether you choose to submit by mail or not, remember that the appearance of your application makes a statement about you. In other words, neatness counts. The biggest drawback of the paper application is the potential for a sloppy presentation errors that are crossed out, smudges, typos corrected with globs of Wite-Out . You won t get points for neatness, but you can lose out if your essay, and application as a whole, are messy. [Pg.170]

Don t smudge anything with sloppy erasures. If your eraser is smudgy, ask the proctor for another. [Pg.36]

Unaware of it at the time, the college student s sloppy chemistry had, in addition to synthesizing MPPP, inadvertently created some additional by-products that were very toxic. It turns out that one of the by-products, called l-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), is very toxic to neurons in... [Pg.80]
