The closest-packed planes are planes with minimum surface energy, and for this reason they are most commonly either faceting planes or slide planes. It has been observed that closest-packed layers are typical of intergrown crystals, or twins (Belov 1976). As mentioned above, one dislocation type is the closest-packing defect ... [Pg.126]

The poor compression of paracetamol was addressed through the preparation of a new orthorhombic form [55]. Owing to its well-known poor compressional properties, commercially available paracetamol materials for direct compression are compounds of paracetamol with gelatin, polyvinylpyrrolidone, starch, or starch derivatives. Since a chemically pure paracetamol that could be used for direct compression would constitute a better compendial article, a new polymorph was produced. The new form was recrystallized from dioxane, and its crystals were found to consist of sliding planes that led to good compressibility. However, the orthorhombic form is metastable with respect to the monoclinic form phase conversion was observed if the raw material contained greater than 20% of the monoclinic phase. However, the dissolution rates for the two forms were found to be similar, and therefore any questions as to the relative bioavailability of the two forms would probably be meaningless. [Pg.355]

Under the continuous earthquake activities, deformation was ongoing and the hypergene fissures developed more quickly. When the tensile fractures in the scarp deepened later on to a certain depth, the stress accumulation around the locked patches brought this part of the rock into an accelerated creep stage. Plastic strain in crystalline solids is related to the appearance and movement of the special linear defects of the structure referred to as dislocations [2-5,8,17]. In a sliding plane, the dislocation separates the parts of the crystal in which a shift in the position of atoms by one interatomic distance has already occurred and those in which such displacement has not yet taken place (Figure 7.17). The movement of dislocation throughout the entire crystal results in a shift of the sliding plane by one interatomic distance.
