A serious attempt should be made to bring the patient back to his old place of work. If it fails and the patient has a relapse, the exposure conditions must be re-analysed. Has the offending allergen been removed entirely or was it met in other products or materials Has the patient followed the instructions on avoidance of contact (Table 4) and followed the skin care program (Table 5) The next attempt should be carried out after a more extended period of sick leave to guarantee that the barrier function of the skin has been restored. When contact allergens are present as dusts or vapours that cannot be controlled by ventilation or otherwise removed, it is usually impossible to continue in the same job.

Step II is the daily skin care program using cleansing granules, alpha hydroxyl acid toners and vitamin A conditioning lotions to accelerate the jjroduction of new skin cells. These three skin care formulations are used daily. However, patients with dry skin or who live in a dry climate start slowly, skijjping days as needed to avoid retinoid dermatitis. 

After completing steps I, II, III of their skin care program the patient is ready for step IX the progressive peel. They wash their face to remove any residual make-up, remove contact lenses and ear rings. Again, the peel program is outlined for them. 

This 17-year-old patient had developed acne at age 12 years on the nose, chin and forehead. As the condition progressed out across the face it became more inflammatory. Even with his daily skin care program he was unable to control the flare-ups. With the addition of two progressive peels his condition was controlled (Figure 6.5).
