Transistors single molecule

Very recently, it has been reported that SWCNT can be synthesized by decomposition of benzene with Fe catalyst [27]. It would be of most importance to establish the controllability of the diameter and the helical pitch in this kind of synthesis of SWCNT toward the development of novel kinds of electronic devices such as single molecule transistor [41]. It can be said that this field is full of dream. [Pg.10]

An SWCNT a few microns long with electrical contacts deposited via nanolithography techniques is an ideal system to study single-molecule transistor effects, in which an electrode (Vga/e) close to the conducting CNT is used to modulate the conductance [33]. [Pg.120]

Carbon nanotubes are longer than 1 nm, while off-the-shelf silicon transistors are up to 1 pm long. Because of their electrical properties, ropes of single shell carbon nanotubes may become a commercial single molecule transistor [64], both on the basis of performance and dimensions. When dissimilar nanotube molecules are joined end-to-end, the junction between them may function as a diode, commonly used to convert alternating current into direct current. Different junction types result by inserting defects into such junctions [70] [73]. [Pg.42]

A single-molecule transistor design (Fig. 7) was used to shed some light on the mechanism of charge transport through single trimetal molecules [60]. This... [Pg.22]

Twenty years ago, it was not clear what the conductance of a single molecule meant much less what means might be used to measure it reproducibly. The construction of a single-molecule transistor seemed a remote possibility. Now that these milestones are passed, we are beginning to see the first applications of single-molecule electronics, as opposed to basic experiments designed to elucidate mechanisms. Two of these applications, enzyme dynamics and analytical chemistry, were discussed here. Each may prove revolutionary, but much is to be done before these technologies become robust. In particular, these systems need much more study from an electrochanical standpoint if stable and reproducible devices are to become routine. [Pg.202]
