Nurse The reason why I am not sure it is as simple as that is if growth rate was determined by a single limiting factor of that type, I would have thought mutationally, if we selected for growth rate, we should rapidly isolate and identify those limiting factors. On the whole, when we select for rapid growth, these factors don t come out. 

This is not a problem with a single limiting reactant since we have stoichiometric amounts of HC1 and NaOH. Our final solution is a salt solution with no excess acid or base.

Periodic functions such as sin jc or cos x have no asymptotes (no single limiting value), because their values oscillate between two limits as the independent variable increases in a positive or negative sense. For example, the value of the function f x) = cos(2x) oscillates between +1 and -1 as x — oo (see Figure 3.4). 

The limiting amino acid can be determined by taking the ratio of the amino acid present in the test protein and dividing it by the amount in the reference protein. The amino acid with the lowest ratio (test protein/reference) is the limiting amino acid. In this example, the single limiting amino acid is histidine (a dietary essential amino acid for young children). The lowest ratio is for the sum of phenylalanine and tyrosine.
