The performance of Double Wave screws was provided earlier by Kruder and others [20-22]. For these trials, the extrusion process was capable of higher rates and lower discharge temperatures than well designed conventional single-flighted screws. The TF-Mini and TF-156 compactors (Vector Corporation, Marion, Iowa, U.S.A.) were equipped with concavo-convex rolls and single flight screws. The roll speed of the TF-156 was scaled to achieve the same linear velocity 74.2 in./min as the TF-Mini model. This setting maintained a comparable dwell time for material in the compaction zone. The TF-156 roll force was scaled to 5.6 ton, which equaled a force per linear-inch approximately equal to the TF-Mini 3.1 ton/in. roll width. The authors established a feed screw speed to roll speed ratio of 1.3 1 for the trials. Table 7 gives the compactor equipment settings.

This simple model is schematically represented for single flighted screws in Fig. 10.28. The model is based on the overall balances for enthalpy, mass, and concentration that can be derived for each individual chamber moving through the extruder. Technical requirements may sometimes mean switching between elements with different numbers of threads along an extruder. This always requires transfer elements, spacers in the simplest case, otherwise a slight axial movement of the screw shafts towards one another will cause them to collide. Figure 5.11 shows this for the transition between triple- and single-flighted screw elements.

Equation 5.11 applies approximately for single-flighted screws on the basis of forced conveying. 

This patent relating to single-flighted screw profiles clearly shows that the tip angles of a pair of screws do not have to be the same size. 

This patent contains a description of a transition from a single-flighted to a triple-flighted and back to a single-flighted screw profile. The barrel is not cleaned in the triple-flighted region.
