These IPNs, prepared by the mixing of two components, were essentially simultaneous interpenetrating polymer networks (SIN). 

The first IPN resin was invented by Aylsworth in 1914 (51). The mixture of rubber, sulfur, phenol and formaldehyde, on heating, yields a simultaneous interpenetrating polymer network... 

There are two general methods of synthesizing IPN s, see Figure 1. For sequential IPN s, polymer network I is synthesized, and monomer II plus crosslinker and activator is swelled in and polymerized. For simultaneous interpenetrating polymer networks, SIN s, both monomers and their respective crosslinkers and activators are mixed together and polymerized, usually by separate and non-interfering kinetic methods such as stepwise and chain polymerizations. Most recently, two other groups have undertaken the study of castor oil-based IPN s. Tan and Xie investigated the conditions for formation of castor oil polyurethanes with homopolymers or copolymers of styrene, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile. Simultaneous interpenetrating polymer networks were made which had high strength, good resilience and high resistance to abrasion and hydrolysis.
