Simultaneous exploitation

Ultramodern techniques are being applied to the study of corrosion thus a very recent initiative at Sandia Laboratories in America studied the corrosion of copper in air spiked with hydrogen sulphide by a form of combinatorial test, in which a protective coat of copper oxide was varied in thickness, and in parallel, the density of defects in the copper provoked by irradiation was also varied. Defects proved to be more influential than the thickness of the protective layer. This conclusion is valuable in preventing corrosion of copper conductors in advanced microcircuits. This set of experiments is typical of modern materials science, in that quite diverse themes... combinatorial methods, corrosion kinetics and irradiation damage... are simultaneously exploited. [Pg.457]

While all the above listed methods rely solely on the CC formalism (and, in some cases, on finite order MBPT), the so-called externally corrected (ec) CCSD methods 4,16,17) try to simultaneously exploit the information from some independent source, which is capable of handling the nondynamic correlation, is readily available, and requires only modest computational effort. The essence of these ecCCSD methods stems from the fact that the CC energy, at whatever level of truncation, is fully determined by the one- and two-body clusters via the asymmetric energy formula... [Pg.13]

To overcome the limitations of the database search methods, conformational search methods were developed [95,96,109]. There are many such methods, exploiting different protein representations, objective function tenns, and optimization or enumeration algorithms. The search algorithms include the minimum perturbation method [97], molecular dynamics simulations [92,110,111], genetic algorithms [112], Monte Carlo and simulated annealing [113,114], multiple copy simultaneous search [115-117], self-consistent field optimization [118], and an enumeration based on the graph theory [119]. [Pg.286]

In the mid-1950s a number of new thermoplastics with some very valuable properties beeame available. High-density polyethylenes produced by the Phillips process and the Ziegler process were marketed and these were shortly followed by the discovery and rapid exploitation of polypropylene. These polyolefins soon became large tonnage thermoplastics. Somewhat more specialised materials were the acetal resins, first introduced by Du Pont, and the polycarbonates, developed simultaneously but independently in the United States and Germany. Further developments in high-impact polystyrenes led to the development of ABS polymers. [Pg.8]

Galvanic corrosion is the enhanced corrosion of one metal by contact with a more noble metal. The two metals require only being in electrical contact with each other and exposing to the same electrolyte environment. By virtue of the potential difference that exists between the two metals, a current flows between them, as in the case of copper and zinc in a Daniell cell. This current dissolves the more reactive metal (zinc in this case), simultaneously reducing the corrosion rate of the less reactive metal. This principle is exploited in the cathodic protection (Section 53.7.2) of steel structures by the sacrificial loss of aluminum or zinc anodes. [Pg.893]

The nanometer level of characterization is necessary for nanochemistry. We have learned from the history of once-new disciplines such as polymer science that progress in synthesis (production method) and in physical and chemical characterization methods are essential to establish a new chemistry. They should be made simultaneously by exchanging developments in the two areas. Surface forces measurement is certainly unique and powerful and will make a great contribution to nanochemistry, especially as a technique for the characterization of solid-liquid interfaces, though its potential has not yet been fully exploited. Another important application of measurement in nanochemistry should be the characterization of liquids confined in a nanometer-level gap between two solid surfaces, for which this review cites only Refs. 42-43. [Pg.15]

In a distillation column reactor (DCR), reaction and distillation occur simultaneously. This technology is also referred to as reactive distillation, or, if a catalyst is involved, as catalytic distillation. DCRs offer distinct advantages of exploiting the exothermicity of reactions, such... [Pg.129]

The popularity of reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPC) is easily explained by its unmatched simplicity, versatility and scope [15,22,50,52,71,149,288-290]. Neutral and ionic solutes can be separated simultaneously and the rapid equilibration of the stationary phase with changes in mobile phase composition allows gradient elution techniques to be used routinely. Secondary chemical equilibria, such as ion suppression, ion-pair formation, metal complexatlon, and micelle formation are easily exploited in RPC to optimize separation selectivity and to augment changes availaple from varying the mobile phase solvent composition. Retention in RPC, at least in the accepted ideal sense, occurs by non-specific hydrophobic interactions of the solute with the... [Pg.202]

In 2003, Sprang and Bigler have developed a pulse sequence, HMBC-RELAY, subsequently improved in 2004, that yields two simultaneously detected types of long-range correlation spectra.60,61 One spectrum shows all 7ch connectivities while the other shows exclusively 2/ch connectivities. Their method uses homonuclear 3/hh couplings between the protons of adjacent carbons, as already been exploited for the XCORFE... [Pg.326]
