Science magazine had printed a summary of a pharmacology conference where a prominent scientist, Dr. David Nachmanson, had expounded his formulation of the mode of action of cholinesterase inhibitors. His list of references included a study published earlier by a Dr. VanSint. Fred and I sensed the opportunity to shake up our beloved Chief Scientist a little bit. We forged a dissenting view addressed from Van to Dr. Nachmanson, fdling it with preposterous assertions. We typed it carefully, and signed it Van M. Sim, M.D. (as distinct from Dr.VanSinf ). 

Clandestine work done in collaboration with the CIA was specifically exempted from the directive. Van Sim s estimate that 3,000 exposures to LSD took place during the 1950s, however, is suspect. His 1961 summary does not substantiate this... 

Three thousand individual volunteer exposures to LSD took place under the supervision of Dr. Van Sim before 1961 (his own estimate, according to his summary report). Adding up the numbers given for the separate tests, this estimate appears to have been inflated by at least a factor of two. It is hard to be precise because the records are incomplete, and some volunteers received multiple doses.

Summary of mechanism. Taking into account the data in hand (and that which follows), it is possible to classify the many processes which occur in molecular SIMS in a qualitative manner. Table II, while not complete, illustrates many of the processes which contribute to molecular SIMS, FAB, and LD spectra. The following synopsis of the mechanism complements the material in Table II ...

In summary, these SIMS studies have shown that reproducible measurements of some surface chemistry changes are possible following very early attack of glass surfaces by water. Early depletions of sodium and more surprisingly, boron, are indicated even after a few minutes of leaching time. The apparent effects of surface hydration on the SIMS relative ion yields also warrants further investigation. 

In summary, it has been shown that photo-immobilized MAD-Gal can be used as a linker and that the biological availability of the monosaccharide residue dishes was probed and ascertained chemically by XPS and ToF-SIMS. 

In summary, four experimental/calculational techniques, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, SIMS-SEM-EDX and NAA with radiochemical analysis, were used to determine the concentration of Li in reactor steels either by direct measurement or by calculation from measured values. Li measurements from the first two techniques, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS, were discarded due to excessive values/excessive limit of detection. SIMS/SEM-EDX measurement of Li and two approaches to neutron activation of steels samples with radiochemical measurement of values used to calculate Li concentrations yielded 10 valid data points spread over one order of magnitude, see Table 4. In particular, the two neutron activation approaches using differing flux, time and temperature conditions yielded good consistency of calculated values of Li. Consequently, the average Li concentration in Magnox RPV steel is considered to be < 1 ng g" and estimated as 0.4 0.2 ngg- x(lB). 

Alkali Iodide salts have also been proposed as standards for quadrupole Instruments (2. ). In summary, to obtain accurate quantitative results with SIMS, a well prepared simlllar standard, careful Instrumental control and characterization, and an understanding of the sample being analyzed Is required.

Electron, ion, and photon emissions from the outermost layers of the surface can be used to provide qualitative or quantitative information about the chemical composition of the surface. The most widely applicable techniques for characterizing the surface chemistry of ceramic powders are Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which is also referred to as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Table 3.8 provides a summary of the main measurement parameters for these three techniques.

A brief review of each technique will be followed by a discussion of results illustrating the application of the particular technique to adhesion. Examples are given of surface characterization of pretreated adherends, adhesive/adherend interactions, failure surface analysis, and correlation of these results to bond performance.
