Silver subchloride

Silver subchloride, AgaCl.—When silver subfluoride is heated with phosphorus trichloride at 140° C., silver subchloride is formed.8 It is also a product of the interaction of silver nitrate and cuprous chloride, of a colloidal solution of silver and chlorine-water,9 and of silver-foil and weak oxidizers such as cupric chloride. 

In another electrolytic method formerly worked commercially, fused sodium chloride 1 was employed as electrolyte. There are several practical difficulties to be overcome in carrying on this process, due partly to the corrosive nature of the chlorine liberated, and partly to the tendency to form the so-called subchloride of sodium. Either the formation of this subchloride must be prevented or, if produced, it must not be permitted to regenerate sodium chloride by interaction with the chlorine evolved at the anode. The chlorine can be removed by contact at the anode with a heavy metal, such as lead, copper, or silver.2 Lowering the temperature of fusion by admixture with chloride of potassium or of an alkaline-earth-metal,3 or with sodium fluoride,4 prevents the formation of the subchloride.

The question is to be divided into two others. First, do subchloride bromides and iodides of silver exist This question is justified because the only subhalide of which we are sure is Ag2Fl, made by Giintz, and later by L. Wohler and Rodewald. For the existence of other subhalides the best evidence we have is the experiments of Luther, which have received some discredit from the researches of Heyer,tt and Weisz.tt...
