Silver magnetic properties

Pure holmium has a metallic to bright silver luster. It is relatively soft and malleable, and is stable in dry air at room temperature, but rapidly oxidizes in moist air and at elevated temperatures. The metal has unusual magnetic properties. Few uses have yet been found for the element. The element, as with other rare earths, seems to have a low acute toxic rating. [Pg.193]

In addition to nickel alloys, nickel also forms an important alloying element in stainless steels and in cast irons, in both of which it confers additional corrosion resistance and improved mechanical and engineering properties, and in Fe-Ni alloys for obtaining controlled physical and magnetic properties (see Chapter 3). Under deposition of cobalt nanocrystals, self-assemblies of particles are observed and the nanocrystals are organized in a hexagonal network (Fig. 2). However, it can be seen that the grid is not totally covered. We do not have a simple explanation for such behavior. In fact, the size distribution, which is one of the major parameters in controlling monolayer formation, is similar to that observed with the other nanocrystals, such as silver and silver sulfide. Pure iron is a fairly soft silver/white ductile and malleable moderately dense (7.87 gcm ) metal melting at 1,535 °C. It exists in three allotropic forms body-centered cubic (alpha), face-centered cubic (gamma), and a high temperature body-centered cubic (delta). The average value for the lattice constant at 20 °C is 2.86638(19)A. The physical properties of iron markedly depend on the presence of low levels of carbon or silicon. The magnetic properties are sensitive to the presence of low levels of these elements, and at room temperature pure iron is ferromagnetic, but above the Curie point (768 °C), it is paramagnetic. [Pg.405]
