Many silver compounds, such as silver nitrate, silver chloride, and sdver oxides, have wide commercial applications. The most important uses are in photography and batteries (see individual compounds). 

As regards other coordination compounds of silver, electrochemical synthesis of metallic (e.g. Ag and Cu) complexes of bidentate thiolates containing nitrogen as an additional donor atom has been described by Garcia-Vasquez etal. [390]. Also Marquez and Anacona [391] have prepared and electrochemically studied sil-ver(I) complex of heptaaza quinquedentate macrocyclic ligand. It has been shown that the reversible one-electron oxidation wave at -1-0.75 V (versus Ag AgBF4) corresponds to the formation of a ligand-radical cation. Other applications of coordination silver compounds in electrochemistry include, for example, a reference electrode for aprotic media based on Ag(I) complex with cryptand 222, proposed by Lewandowski etal. [392]. Potential of this electrode was less sensitive to the impurities and the solvent than the conventional Ag/Ag+ electrode. 

A fire and explosion reulted from encapsulating nuclear waste [15], consisting mostly of sodium nitrate, in asphalt. The full details of the reaction reported are complex, the principles simple [12]. Nitrate/asphalt has previously seen application as rocket fuel and may have been behind Greek Fire [Editor]. A more theoretical study, also looking at the influence of silver compounds has appeared [13].

Like the more widely used 1,2,3-triazoles, many 1,2,4-triazole derivatives find application in photography thanks to the adsorption of thiones on silver halides, reactivity with silver compounds or the formation of disulfides as potential free radicals. Also 5-propargylthiol (344) stabilizes photographic emulsions (74GEP2304321). 

Antimicrobial properties of silver have been known and utilized for centuries. It is well established that only silver ions are antimicro-bially active, while elemental silver is not. Many biomedical devices have been coated with silver and/or silver compounds for antimicrobial purposes. The applications of surfaces treated with silver or its compounds include devices such as topical wound dressings, urinary catheters, endotracheal tubes, cardiac valves, etc.72 Electroless deposition of silver or its compounds can quite successfully be used for coating of biomedical devices. 

OTHER COMMENTS silver metal and soluble silver compounds have applications in the following list of common operations used in the manufacture of silver nitrate for use in photography, mirrors, inks, dyes, and porcelain used in the manufacture of silver salts as catalysts in oxidation-reduction and polymerization reactions also utilized in chemical synthesis, in glass manufacture, in silver-plating, in photography, as laboratory reagents, and in medicine.
