Siloxane based hybrids

The sol-gel synthesis of siloxane-based hybrid organic-inorganic implants usually involves di- or trifunctional organosilanes co-condensed with metal alkoxides, mainly Si(OR)4 and Ti(OR)4. As we will see in this section, the incorporation of Ca salts is a common strategy to provide bioactivity at the systems. Each of these components has specific roles that will be reviewed and discussed. [Pg.379]

Therefore, numerous siloxane-based hybrid organic-inorganic materials have been developed in the past few years. This development yields many interesting new materials, with improved mechanical properties timable between those of glasses and those of polymers. Sol-gel processed hybrid materials such as, optical devices, new sensors and biosensors, new catalysts or membranes have been reported to have high efficiencly, good selectivity and stability (Lebeau, 1999). [Pg.1430]

Despite these drawbacks, various co-condensed Si—O—M species were identified by NMR in isotopically enriched siloxane-based hybrid materials ([2] and references therein) either the chemical shift difference between Si—O—Si and M—O—M oxo-bridges was large and a resonance signal due to the Si—O—M... [Pg.657]

The examples provided in the previous two sections describe the emission properties governed by the emitting features of the embedded optically active dyes. Nevertheless, siloxane-based hybrids lacking the inclusion of external activator centers are able to emit white light, as described in this section. [Pg.902]

Chapter 5 is a review of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), hybrid POSS-organic copolymers, and POSS resin nanocomposites. Although silsesquioxanes have been known since tiie 1960s, only recently, through controlled synthesis and purification, have their structure and unique properties been determined and their useful applications been explored. This chapter is complemented by a discussion of the synthesis and properties of silica- and silsesquioxanes-containing polymer nanohybrids in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 involves a review of the preparation and characterization of siloxane-based polyviologens, polyurethanes, and divinylben-zene elastomers. [Pg.4]

This section reports a room temperature, one-step hydrosilation reaction for the synthesis of a siloxane-vinylbenzene hybrid copolymer. This process supersedes other thermal polymerization methods used for vinyl monomers. An alternating ABAB-type polymer from TMDS and divinyl monomers provides a route to a wide variety of Si-based materials that are thermally stable in the oxygen free atmosphere... [Pg.174]

This section cited some interesting polyviologens and reported a two-step synthesis by which two classes of polymers, polysiloxanes, and polyviologens are combined to produce a hybrid copolymer. The synthesis of an AB2-type monomer from TMDS and a vinyl monomer was achieved at room temperature. The first step of the reaction is quantitative and time dependent. The hybrid copolymer is characterized by FT-IR and H-NMR spectroscopy. The siloxane-based polymer without the Si-O-C bond is thermally stable. Applications of the hybrid copolymer are expected in the packaging and food industries and as a new biocidal material. [Pg.182]
