In Figure 18.17, the aerogel with -NCO attached to the chitosan polymer therein is represented in the diagram in the upper left. It is shown reacting with an amine substituted silicone polymer to form a urea-linkage-attached silicone-aerogel composite site. [Pg.399]

Aerogel is a special materials with extreme micron porosity. It consists of separate particles of several nanometers, interconnected in a high-porosity branched structure. It was made on the basis of gel consisting of colloid silicone, the structural parts of which are filled with solvents. Aerogel is subjected to high temperature under pressure which rises to the critical point it is very strong and easily endures stress both at lift-off and in the space environment. This material has already been tried in space by Spacelab II and Eureca shuttles, as well as by the American Mars Pathfinder Rover. [Pg.13]

The pore structure of two types of catalyst support material were studied 7-alumina and silica aerogel. The alumina samples were commercial catalyst supports made in 1/8 inch diameter pellet form by Harshaw Chemical. Silica aerogels were prepared from silica gels synthesized by a two step acid/base catalyzed procedure employing TE0S with a water to silicon ratio equal to 3.7 [17] and ammonium hydroxide concentration of 0.005 M (sample A) or 0.01 M... [Pg.258]

Making an aerogel involves base-catalyzed hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions of silicon alkoxides in an alcohol followed by 24 hours of aging in the alcohol solvent to produce an alcogel. Then the alcohol is removed from the pores of the alcogel... [Pg.449]
