Silane-based primers

The process is a two-step one where the initial stage is to prime and then dry/stove the substrate to be bonded. Although the literature does not give examples of the primer used, it is fairly clear that a suitable surface protection or corrosion protection primer could be used by inference, this could be extended to a silane-based primer. 

The other important observation from the same era was made by Gettings and Kinloch using SSIMS (94J. When studying the fracture surfaces of adhesive joints fabricated using various silane-based primers, they were able to draw a direct correlation between good joint durability and the presence of an mtz = 100+ ion in the SSIMS spectrum at the failure surface (Fig. 13). Two other points of interest are that it appears that such hydration inhibitors are only really effective on an aluminium alloy substrate which has already been pretreated by the CAE process. It would obviously be useful for the technologist if such simple primers were effective on a degreased or abraded surface. Secondly, the above work [82] also suggested that some silane-based primers could function as hydration inhibitors, so adding another possible mechanism whereby such organometallic primers might increase the service life of adhesive joints.
