The technique described in Section 11.5.2 above can be employed to create biological signaling units with protein biosensors [62, 63], changing shape upon binding of a ligand—for example, calcium or chloride [64]—and thereby changing relative conformation and FRET efficiency [65], Alternatively, synthetic dyes, which change decay profile in a predictable manner dependent on environment, can be employed. 

PET uses positron ([)1 )-emitting isotopes as the signaling unit. Positrons are antimatter and annihilate when they encounter an electron, giving rise to two photons 180° to one another. The emission of the photon pairs must be detected simultaneously to give rise to images showing the localization of the isotope (Fig. 2).

All of these circuits are made up of the same elementary signaling units, the nerve cells. 

Radar devices in their most elementary form consist of an oscillator which produces electromagnetic radiation, a wave-guide that carries it to the antenna (which beams the waves and collects returning echoes), a receiver which selects and amplifies the echo, and a display or signal unit which makes the data available in the required form (Ref 1)... 

Balzani, Vogde et al. demonstrated for dendritic cyclam compounds that signalling units are dendritically amplified by increasing the number of peripheral fluorophores. Opportunities for these PET sensor systems exist in the combination of selective coordination sites with the dendritic architecture. The mechanism resembles that described above, but can be influenced by the introduction of dendritic units of different generations into the sensor system. The crucial influence of the density of the signaling units on the surface of a hybrid material for a detection method that can principally suffer from auto-induced modulations such as fluorometry is also evident from the results in References 27 and 28. An increase in the number of alkylaminoanthracene units on the MCM-41 surface from a mean distance between two anthracenes of 33 or 23 nm to 10 nm led to the appearance of a significant amount of excimer fluorescence, generated from an anthracene in the excited state and a neighboring one in the ground state in the absence of an analyte. Similar observations have been made for hybrid optical materials that contain fluorophores but do not exhibit any other explicit function see, for example, Ganschow et al.30... 

The work of Devi and associates [22] provided a potential molecular mechanism for mu-delta interactions and a physical basis to explain biochemical observations of a mu-delta opioid receptor complex [23,24]. Their work and the efforts of others [25] have clearly demonstrated that mu and delta receptors can form heterodimers, leading to synergistic interactions and the generation of novel signaling units. This work, in other words, provides a molecular mechanism to explain how it is possible for three basic types of opioid receptors to form a greater number of pharmacologically defined opioid receptor subtypes.
