The other major receptor for HA is receptor for HA-mediated motility (RHAMM),133,134 discovered and characterized by Eva Turley. This receptor is implicated in cell locomotion, focal adhesion turnover, and contact inhibition. It also is expressed in a number of variant isoforms. The interactions between HA and RHAMM regulate locomotion of cells by a complex network of signal transduction events and interaction with the cytoskeleton of cells. It is also an important regulator of cell growth.135... [Pg.253]

Voltage-activated Ca " channels are activated by membrane depolarization and represent a large family of related channels with a wide tissue distribution. They are found ubiquitously in neurons, muscles, and endocrine cells as well as in many epithelial and endothelial cells. In addition to neurotransmitter release, they mediate a variety of essential functions in the body including muscle contraction, insulin secretion, gene expression, modulation of signal transduction events and in excess can cause cell death. [Pg.110]

Signal transduction events encotipiss processes that are triggered by the initial interaction of agonists with specific receptors on platelets and result in the activation of effectors, such as pho holipase C and phospholipase A2, leading ultimately to discernible end re nses such as aggregation and secretion. The link between the surface receptors and the effector enzymes is provided in many instances by G-proteins. If the key conqwnents of platelet signal transduction mechanisms are the surfece receptors, the G-proteins that modulate the intracellular effectors, and the effectors, evidence now exists for specific platelet abnormalities at each of tiiese levels. [Pg.430]
