Shull

The development of neutron diffraction by C G Shull and coworkers [30] led to the detennination of the existence, previously only a hypothesis, of antiferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism. More recently neutron diffraction, because of its sensitivity to light elements in the presence of heavy ones, played a cmcial role in demonstrating the importance of oxygen content m high-temperature superconductors.

A study by Shull et al. [35]. on the adhesion of soft and relatively thin elastomeric lenses to glass substrates shows that the compliance (C = S/P) predicted by the JKR theory is larger than the actual value by a constant factor. 

They argue that the Hertzian load (Ph) is not signifieantly affected by the finite size effeets, therefore the JKR expression relating the load to the contact radius and adhesion energy (Eq. 11) should still be valid. Using a combined analytical and computational approach, Hui et al. [36] found that a correction given by Shull et al. for the eompression of such thin lenses was accurate for moderately large eontact radius...

It has been suggested (Shull and Lowdin 1955) that, instead of the set III.56, one should use the complete discrete set... 

Comparing the two sets III.57 and III.55 for the same value of the effective charge rj, we find Is = Is, whereas all the other functions (nl) may be expanded in the functions (nl) and the associated continuum. In studying the function (2s), it has, e.g., been observed (Shull and Lowdin 1955,1958) that the discrete functions (nl) give a contribution of only 56.501 per cent, which implies that the remaining 43.499 per cent must come from the hydrogen-like continuum. The importance of the continuum part can hence hardly be enough emphasized.

It should be observed that all three calculations quoted have been carried out by means of discrete basic sets which are equivalent to Eqs. III.56 and III.57. Shull and Lowdin (1958), and Watson (1956) have determined the best energy by solving a secular equation of type III.21 the former have used the same exponent rjt = rj0 for all terms to obtain the highest degree of simplicity, whereas the latter in one case has chosen ryt = rj0+l and, in another case, has varied the exponents freely and even split up single ex-...
