Neutron diffraction recent

In general, anions are less strongly hydrated than cations, but recent neutron diffraction data have indicated that even around the halide ions there is a well defined primary hydration shell of water molecules, which, in... [Pg.567]

The development of neutron diffraction by C G Shull and coworkers [30] led to the detennination of the existence, previously only a hypothesis, of antiferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism. More recently neutron diffraction, because of its sensitivity to light elements in the presence of heavy ones, played a cmcial role in demonstrating the importance of oxygen content m high-temperature superconductors. [Pg.1382]

Pings [106], and a neutron diffraction study by Mildner and Carpenter [107], both concluded that there is no clear evidence for sp carbon and that the radial distribution functions can be satisfactorily indexed to a hexagonal arrays of carbon atoms. A similar conclusion was reached in a recent neutron diffraction study of activated carbons by Gardner et al [108]. [Pg.24]

Black AgO is prepared by oxidation of silver salts with 03, S2Og- and, most recently, S02/air mixtures, as well as by anodic oxidation [31]. Neutron diffraction shows it to be AgIAgIII02 with 2-coordinate Ag1 and square planar Ag111 sites. It is stable to around 100°C and gives solutions of Ag2+ when dissolved in dilute acid. Treatment with alkaline periodate retains the disproportionation... [Pg.282]

In the case of selective oxidation catalysis, the use of spectroscopy has provided critical Information about surface and solid state mechanisms. As Is well known( ), some of the most effective catalysts for selective oxidation of olefins are those based on bismuth molybdates. The Industrial significance of these catalysts stems from their unique ability to oxidize propylene and ammonia to acrylonitrile at high selectivity. Several key features of the surface mechanism of this catalytic process have recently been descrlbed(3-A). However, an understanding of the solid state transformations which occur on the catalyst surface or within the catalyst bulk under reaction conditions can only be deduced Indirectly by traditional probe molecule approaches. Direct Insights Into catalyst dynamics require the use of techniques which can probe the solid directly, preferably under reaction conditions. We have, therefore, examined several catalytlcally Important surface and solid state processes of bismuth molybdate based catalysts using multiple spectroscopic techniques Including Raman and Infrared spectroscopies, x-ray and neutron diffraction, and photoelectron spectroscopy. [Pg.27]

Also known for some time is a phase transition at low temperature (111K), observed in studies with various methods (NQR, elasticity measurement by ultrasound, Raman spectrometry) 112 temperature-dependent neutron diffraction showed the phase transition to be caused by an antiphase rotation of adjacent anions around the threefold axis ([111] in the cubic cell) and to lower the symmetry from cubic to rhombohedral (Ric). As shown by inelastic neutron scattering, this phase transition is driven by a low-frequency rotatory soft mode (0.288 THz 9.61 cm / 298 K) 113 a more recent NQR study revealed a small hysteresis and hence first-order character of this transition.114 This rhombohedral structure is adopted by Rb2Hg(CN)4 already at room temperature (rav(Hg—C) 218.6, rav(C—N) 114.0 pm for two independent cyano groups), and the analogous phase transition to the cubic structure occurs at 398 K.115... [Pg.1261]

Recent progress in electron diffraction has significantly broadened its applications from a primary a microstructure characterization tool to an accurate structure analysis technique that traditionally belongs almost exclusively to the domain of X-ray and neutron diffraction. This development is timely since the focus of modem materials feature size is increasingly on nanoscale stmctures, where the electron high spatial... [Pg.143]

Like X-ray diffraction patterns, neutron and electron diffraction patterns provide averaged information about the structure of a compound. Details of these techniques are given in works by Hirsch et al. (1965) and West (1988). Neutron diffraction involves interaction of neutrons with the nuclei of the atoms. As the neutrons are scattered relatively evenly by all the atoms in the compound, they serve to indicate the positions of the protons in an oxide hydroxide. This technique has been applied to elucidation of the structure and/or magnetic properties of goethite (Szytula et al., 1968 Forsyth et al., 1968), akaganeite (Szytula et al., 1970), lepidocrocite (Oles et al., 1970 Christensen Norlund-Christensen, 1978), hematite (Samuelson Shirane, 1970 Fernet et al., 1984) and wiistite (Roth, 1960 Cheetham et al., 1971 Battle Cheetham, 1979). A neutron diffractogram of a 6-line ferrihydrite was recently produced by Jansen et al. (2002) and has helped to refine its structure (see chap. 2). [Pg.177]

The five years since last considering specifically recent developments in X-ray and neutron diffraction methods for zeolites [1] have witnessed substantial progress. Some techniques, such as high resolution powder X-ray diffraction using synchrotron X-rays, have blossomed from earliest demonstrations of feasibility to widespread and productive application. Others, such as neutron powder diffraction, have shown steady progress. For still others, notably microcrystal diffraction, a variety of circumstances have contributed to extended gestation periods. Additionally, opportunities scarcely considered earlier (such as single crystal Laue diffraction, and certain developments in computer simulations that complement diffraction work) now command broad attention and warrant the commitment of substantial further investment. [Pg.133]
