Shot effect

The emission of thermal electrons is subject to statistical fluctuations (lead shot effect). It is influenced by the current strength, the number of electric charges hberated and the frequency of the radiation [55] (see [40] for further details). [Pg.28]

As a second illustration of the use of the general formula (2.14), we take a perfect gas and consider the fluctuations of the number of molecules in a group of G cells in the molecular phase space. Two important physical problems are special cases of this. In the first place, the G cells may include all those, irrespective of momentum, which lie in a certain region of coordinate space. Then the fluctuation is that of the number of molecules in a certain volume, leading immediately to the fluctuation in density. Or in the second place, we may be considering the number of molecules striking a certain surface per second and the fluctuation of this number. In this case, the G cells include all those whose molecules will strike the surface in a second, as for example the cells contained in prisms similar to those shown in Fig. IV-2. Such a fluctuation is important in the theory of the shot effect, or the fluctuation of the number of electrons emitted thermionically from an element of surface of a heated conductor, per second we assume that the number emitted can be computed from the number striking the surface from inside the metal. [Pg.108]

Newer high velocity thermal spray coating processes produce coatings in compression rather than tension because of the shot peening effect of the supersonic particles on impact. This has permitted coating as thick as 12,500 p.m without delamination as compared to older processes limited to 1,250 p.m. The reduced residence time of particles at temperature minimises decomposition of carbides present in conventional d-c plasma. This improves wear and hardness (qv) properties. [Pg.41]

As there now exists a large body of laboratory studies on each of the variable systems, for example the effect of die lime/silica ratio in the slag on the desulphurization of liquid iron, the most appropriate phase compositions can be foreseen to some extent from these laboratory studies when attempting to optimize the complex indusuial process. The factorial uials are not therefore a shot in the dark , but should be designed to take into account die laboratory information. Maraging steel is shown to be superior to a die steel and low alloy steel (both unidentified) in bent beam tests stressed at 75% of the yield strength in distilled water. The unequal attack which occurs in tap water, condensate and other mild electrolytes may lead to perforations of thin-gauge sheet and even to deep pitting of castings. In stronger electrolytes the effect is variable. In chloride solutions such as sea-water, attack on the metal usually results in the pitting of some areas only, but where the metal surface has been rendered reactive, as by shot blasting, attack may be so rapid that uniform dissolution over the whole surface may occur. In either case magnesium-base alloys are not usually suitable for use in aqueous liquids since they are not intrinsically resistant to these electrolytes. [Pg.749]

By the use of many commercial abrasive processes, the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys can be reduced to such an extent that samples of metal that may lie quiescent in salt water for many hours will, after shot blasting, evolve hydrogen vigorously, and the corrosion rate, as measured by loss of weight, will be found to have increased many hundred-fold. The effect in normal atmospheres is naturally much less, yet the activation of the surface is an added hazard and is the opposite of passivation which is essential if later-applied paint finishes are to have proper durability. [Pg.756]
