Shipment and transport

The NRC also imposes special security requirements for spent fuel shipments and transport of highly enriched uranium or plutonium materials that can be used in the manufacture of nuclear weapons. These security measures include route evaluation, escort personnel and vehicles, communications capabiHties, and emergency plans. State governments are notified in advance of any planned shipment within their state of spent fuel, or any other radioactive materials requiring shipment in accident-proof. Type B containers.

This and other questions relating to the taking, storage or transport of blood samples should preferably be discussed with the laboratory, which should be able to make available any sampling apparatus and transport containers necessary for special analyses. These are then tested for suitability for the analyses concerned. The tremendous growth of the aluminum industry as compared to that of other nonferrous metals is shown in Table 10 (30). Aluminum production by country is given in Table 11 (34). The principal markets for aluminum in the United States are containers, packaging, building and constmction, and transportation. These markets accounted for 60% of industry shipments in 1989. Table 12 (34) shows per capita consumption of aluminum. 

Air Transport. Relatively small quantities of chemicals are transported by air, although availability of such service for the movement of samples, emergency shipments, and radioactive chemicals with a short half-life is important. Both economic and safety considerations impede the development of air carriage as a significant means of transporting a substantial volume of chemicals.

All fortified (spiked) matrix samples are prepared in the laboratory at the same concentration. Laboratory spikes are immediately put into cold storage. Trip and fleld spikes are kept cold and sent to the fleld. The trip spikes will accompany sample shipments. The fleld spikes are stored and transported in the same manner as the trip spikes. When practical, air should be pulled through fleld spikes in the same manner as actual fleld samples being taken at the time of the study. 

The principal reasons for drying of concentrates are usually one or more of the following (i) to make them easier to handle and to provide them with free-flowing properties, both for ease of shipment and for convenient use by the procurer (ii) to reduce the transportation cost of shipment to the user s premises and (iii) to preserve the physical and chemical characteristics or the condition of the concentrate during shipping and any storage before actual use. 

Precautions to be taken in transportation Motor vehicles will be placarded regardless of quantity. Drivers will be given full information regarding shipment and conditions in case of an emergency. AR 50-6 deals specifically with the shipment of chemical agents. Shipment of agents will be escorted in accordance with AR 740-32. 

Pricing for treating mercnry-contaminated soils was estimated at 400 to 750/ton ( 440 to 830/metric ton). On-site treatment of mercnry is economical if soil volnmes exceed 3000 yd for lower soil volumes, transport of the soil to a fixed facility is recommended. The lETC fixed facility accepts bulk soil shipments and drummed wastes (D12766M). 

There are countless ways for smugglers to conceal their shipments, and often a ship s captain and crew are not even aware that they are transporting the product. In addition, traffickers send their shipments through several ports to confuse customs officials and blur the product s country of origin. By the time the drug reaches its destination, even if it is discovered, the traffickers usually remain unknown. 

According to Mexican sources, about 60 per cent of the cocaine is trafficked to Mexico by sea, with another 28 per cent by land from Central America (Guatemala and Belize) and 12 per cent by air. Important entry points of cocaine into Mexico are the Pacific region and the Yukatan peninsula on the Atlantic coast from where it is usually transported north by land. While the most voluminous cocaine shipments are transported by sea, most seizures in terms of cases, are on land.7 About 90 per cent of the cocaine is destined for the USA, though close to 10 per cent is apparently destined for Europe, which is a new development.8... 

White phosphorus can enter the environment from its production, use, accidental spills during loading and unloading for shipment, and accidental spills during transport.
