Confusion, hallucinations, delusions, and other psychiatric reactions are potential complications of dopaminergic treatment and are more common and severe with dopamine receptor agonists than with levodopa. Disorders of impulse control may lead to compulsive gambling, shopping, betting, sexual activity, and other behaviors. They clear on withdrawal of the offending medication. [Pg.609]

Other forms of behavior have been shown to be similar to the classical addictions. Some people seem unable to control their use of credit cards or, more generally, to control their impulse to obtain goods in a pattern that is detrimental to their economy and, often, their social life. Aggressive and hostile symptoms can overlap with positive symptoms but specifically emphasize problems in impulse control. They include overt hostility, such as verbal or physical abusiveness or even assault. Such symptoms also include self-injurious behaviors, including suicide and arson or other property damage.
