Serum manganese

Clinical Correlations of Osteoporosis with Serum Manganese... [Pg.53]

The first report of abnormal manganese concentrations in human epileptics was published in 1967 and indicated high serum manganese concentrations in epileptics compared to non-epileptic controls (4). The authors were apparently unaware of the previous animal work that demonstrated a link between manganese deficiency and increased susceptibility to seizure. It was not until 1978 that Tanaka ( 5) presented data indicating that whole blood manganese concentrations were lower in epileptic children than in control children of similar age. A year later Papavasiliou and coworkers (6) in a study of 52... [Pg.105]

In 1980 Hoffman (7) reported that serum manganese concentrations were the same in epileptics and non-epileptic controls in populations of both adults and children. This observation suggests that the differences reported by Tanaka (5) and by Papavasiliou, et al. (6) in whole blood were due to differences in manganese concentrations in the blood cells, probably erythrocytes. Whether this apparent deficiency in the erythrocytes of some epileptics translates into lower manganese concentrations in other tissues of these epileptics is unknown. [Pg.106]

The best way to monitor excessive exposure to manganese includes serum manganese concentration measurement in combination with brain MRI scanning and perhaps a battery of neurofunctional tests (7). Studies have concentrated on manganese in patients on parenteral nutrition (8) and occupational exposure (9). [Pg.2201]

When oral intake is precluded, the recommended daily parenteral supplementation of manganese is 0.15-0.8 mg. Manganese is mainly excreted in the bile during cholestasis serum manganese levels may rise, and manganese toxicity can result. Hjq)ermanganesemia after parenteral nutrition when first reported was linked to portosystemic encephalopathy. Patients with liver disease were particularly at risk. [Pg.2706]

Serum manganese concentrations are not a reliable indicator of the concentrations attained in the brain. However, in one reported case with neurological complications in which alterations in basal ganglia and cerebral signal intensity had been detected during life by magnetic... [Pg.2706]

There is a necessity to balance the need for adequate manganese nutrition against the potential risk from toxicity. This necessitates monitoring of manganese status in at-risk patients. Whole blood manganese levels are not responsive to dietary depletion, but measurement of serum manganese,... [Pg.1131]

Interaction between iron and manganese occurs only between nonheme iron and manganese. Davis et al. (1992a) demonstrated that increasing dietary intakes of nonheme iron, but not heme iron, depressed biomarkers of manganese status, i.e., serum manganese concentrations and lymphocyte manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase activity. [Pg.205]

There are inadequate data on the pharmacokinetics of manganese in children. Although two studies provided typical serum manganese levels in differing ages of healthy children (Alarcon et al. 1996 ... [Pg.348]
