If the components are colourless, their separation can often be followed by working in a quartz (or special glass) tube which is placed in the light of a mercury lamp. The separate zones are then often revealed by their fluorescence. 

The relative volatiHties Ot) are defined by Eq. One simplified method for determining stack height is a geometric method described in ASHRAE. The geometric method assumes an exhaust plume shape with a lower boundary having a 1 5 slope relative to the horizontal. The stack and plume are raised until the lower plume boundary is above rooftop penthouses, separation zones, and zones of high turbulence. ASHRAE provides equations for the sizes and locations of the separation and turbulence zones. A stack height reduction credit is provided to account for the vertical exhaust momentum. 

To control air and contaminant movement between zones, different construction, process-related, and ventilation techniques are used. Clean and dirty areas can be separated using solid walls, curtains, or partitions (Fig. 7.109(2). Ventilation techniques used to separate zones include... 

The zoning of the space is based on the assumption of constant temperature, concentration, and humidity in each separate zone." - The boundaries between the zones can be vertical or horizontal. The balances for air mass flow, contaminant mass flow, water vapor mass flow, and beat flow arc determined between zones and between zone and outer boundaries.

The above conditions are not robust because they are at the limit of the complete separation zone. The equilibrium theory neglects the dispersion phenomena and therefore the purity obtained under these flowrate conditions would be less than 100 % on a TMB system. Complex simulation software, which takes into account the dispersion phenomena, gives a more robust system with higher purities [57].

Thus, they share exactly the same solution (H) and performance criteria (y ) spaces. Furthermore, since their role is simply to estimate y for a given X, no search procedures S are attached to classical pattern recognition techniques. Consequently, the only element that dilfers from one classification procedure to another is the particular mapping procedure / that is used to estimate y(x) and/ or ply = j x). Finally, the separated zones may be easily removed from PLC plate and eluted in order to isolate quantities of the expected compounds. In PLC selection of the mobile phase, the subsequent recovery of the separated zone should be taken into consideration also.

Instead of scraping and manual collection of the adsorbent, the band can be sucked off the plate with a Vacuum-cleaner -type apparatus. Dekker [50] described an apparatus for the isolation of compounds from layers by elution and direct Millipore filtration, and Platt [51] designed a zone collector that used vacuum to transfer separated zones from layers direcdy to vials for hquid scintillation counting of radioactivity.
