The present results show that all marine plants, which may broadly be classified as shade plants, are sensitive to UV irradiation. The most sensitive organisms were found to be phytoplanktonic microalgae. Significantly it is the phytoplankton which may be most at risk should a significant ozone depletion event occur over the productive waters of the the Southern Ocean. [Pg.1346]
