It is a pleasure to contribute this paper to a volume celebrating the 65th birthday of Yngve Ohrn. Yngve is my official Mentor at the University of Florida, and he is an inspiration to me, both personally and professionally. Yngve has taught me that to do science you have to be tough, but also have a sense of humor. 

Editors deeply regret that one of the authors, Professor Iliev passed away at the time of preparation of this volume. We have remembered his highly professional keynote talk, given during the NATO-CARWC, also his enthusiasm and high profile sense of humor. We hope that his laboratory in Bulgaria continues to operate and contribute to the world s body of electrochemical knowledge. 

His sense of humor was duly appreciated. In fact, he was so funny that apparently there wasn t room in him for the knowledge that he was investing in mass murder. Ambros had shown "criminal initiative" because he recommended the site to the Vorstand but this other chap had exercised no "criminal initiative" in voting in the Vorstand to approve the recommendation. 

To those who knew him personally, Burwell was not only an imposing intellect, but a warm, deeply caring, pleasant person, and a complicated individual with many facets. For instance, while wise and judicious, he nevertheless conducted himself with a great sense of humor and wit. Any whom he favored soon realized he could engage in lively conversation on practically any subject. Many of his coworkers also remembered him for his perceptive scientific advice and suggestions. Often in seminars, students felt that they learned more about a subject from Burwell s probing questions than from the seminar itself. His family remembered him also as a caretaker extraordinaire. His devotion to his beloved Elise, particularly during the last year of her life, will be remembered by all. 

It really helps the process a lot if I have a sense of humor, if I can laugh at how unbelievably bizarre my life can be with MCS. I ve had to have my attendants wrap their heads in hats and plastic bags when the chemicals in their hair products made me ill. I knew one woman who asked her mother to wrap her head in aluminum foil. Then there was the time when a television news crew came to interview me, as a physician, for a feature on environmental illness. There I was, flat on my back in the backseat of my car with a camera in my face. I spoke in a calm, professional manner, as though it was perfectly normal to be living horizontally in my car. When that seems normal, you know you ve stepped over to the other side ... 

One of the things I ve learned is to have fun, and I ve learned to have a better sense of humor. I ve always had a sense of humor but I didn t show it off. The first time I said something that made people laugh, it was like Valium. I got on a roll and just kept going. I often laugh and make fun of the things I do or my illness. I use it as a coping mechanism, and it helps other people to be able to talk and relax. Humor is a big part of me now. 

Mark have been reviewed. Yet in them very little has been said about his personality and ways. Certainly he is capable of inspirational leadership and possesses keen insite. Equally true, he works hard and has produced a prodigious amount of research. What then beneath these traits is this remarkable person like Besides his obvious intelligence and organizational skill, Mark is a relaxed, informal man with a broad sense of humor. Certainly his manners are commensurate with those required of one who has attained the zenith of scientific endeavor, yet Mark s informality has never allowed protocol to interfere with expedience. 

The negotiating team will most often include US representatives who act on the US client company s behalf. It is clear, however, that the Chinese are reluctant to have American sellers or buyers represented by third-country parties. The Chinese prefer to deal with Americans representing American products and American companies. They are interested in learning about our thought processes, our marketing practices, our corporate management skills, as well as about our products, services and technology. Yet they have a sense of humor not unlike ours. 

This is a tough question, and the simple answer is, probably not. A light-hearted, witty tone is fine if it fits with your subject. But resist the urge to tell a wild and cra2y story, or to tell a straight one with jokes and puns thrown in. You don t know the sense of humor of your reader. If he or she doesn t find it funny, you run the risk of looking foolish at best. Unless you are known for your great sense of humor, keep your tone upbeat, but leave out the jokes.

Because there are so many different types of comedy, it is difficult to paint a personality profile of the funny person. (Sardonic, witty, outrageous, obnoxious, dark, satirical, childish, etc.) Handwriting analysis isn t the most effective tool to spot furminess or learn humor. Here are two tips. If you see a long wavy t-bar, this indicates a silly sense of humor. The sharp pointy t-bar indicates sarcasm. Often sarcasm can be very witty. It can also be very caustic. 

Shown by a wavy t-bar and/or flourishing wavy beginning strokes in the word patterns. This person has a sense of humor and can become witty if the stroke ends with an angle (analytical) or a sharp point (sarcastic). 

Warn Mama that we have a guest for dinner and tell Bruno I need him. Although he rarely displays it, Nostradamus does have a sense of humor sometimes he can even laugh at himself... 

In addition to being a member of the American Chemical Society and an officer of its Division of Pesticide Chemistry, John was also a member of the Chemical Society of London, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Federation of American Scientists, and was on the editorial staff of the Journal of Chemical Ecology, He was a gentleman in manner and in action. He had a keen analytical mind and an excellent sense of humor. He enjoyed outdoor sports, particularly sailing and skiing, at which he excelled, and he maintained a long and active interest in the Boy Scouts. John was also a loving husband and father. 

His warmth of approach toward new Ph.D. students would put even the most nervous of them at their ease. He loved to engage in day-to-day banter with his research students, as well as discussions of chemistry this arose from his inherent interest in people and life as a whole, and his excellent sense of humor. Sir William Ramsay (4S) had a rare sense of humor. He once said of his visit to the Norwegian chemist, Peter Waage, He speaks a little German, and with my knowledge of Norse, which as you know is surpassed by few and equalled by none of the natives of that country, we got on very well. In writing of a certain pleasure trip, he said, I went to Paris with three spirits more wicked than myself, lawyers. .. a fearful compound, 3 lawyers and a chemist. . . just like NC13 for all the world, liable to explode at any moment (17). 

Oily H. wrote to me that he has experimented with DPT, an analogue of DMT. He encountered elves, which though good-natured, seemed to have a decidedly mischievous sense of humor. When he tried to focus on the elves, they would fade away, but if he relaxed and didn t make a strenuous effort to see them, they would rematerialize. He writes, These... 

The different types of word problems are divided into categories, in case you re only looking for help with age problems or in case you re only interested in interest problems. Most of the examples have a firm basis in reality, but a few are off the wall, just because you need to have a good sense of humor when dealing with math word problems. 

The Liver-Yin and blood are very important in maintaining the function of the Liver. Reviews of the theory of capillarity and its application to solid-state processes have been written by Herring [1], Mullins [2], and Blakely [3]. Adam wrote a classic text on fluid surfaces [4], For modern mathematical treatments of capillarity, consult Finn s book [5]. For a mathematical treatment of curvature and anisotropic interfaces written for materials scientists, see Taylor s review article [6].1 There are useful analogies between interfaces and phase diagrams which are particularly instructive for materials scientists [7]. Anybody with a milligram of curiosity and a sense of humor must read C.V. Boys s book on soap bubbles although written for children, the book is full of useful insights about the nature of interfaces [8]. 

As this volume of Advances in Catalysis was going to press we received word that Herman Pines had passed away on April 10 at the age of 94. He leaves us with the legacy of his scientific work and the memory of an extraordinary man with a curious mind, boundless energy, independence of thought, human compassion, and a fine sense of humor. 

One must learn to keep one s sense of humor. The immortal humorist W avy Gravy once said, If you can t laugh at life, it just isn t funny anymore. The code name of this compound, 2,5-dimethoxy-4-chloroamphetamine is, after, all, DOC. This should certainly appeal to some physicians.
