Self-service support

The evaluation should also examine the ease of calibration and self-docu-mentation of both the computer system and associated measurement and control instrumentation, along with the availability of replacement parts and service support for the expected lifetime of the system application. 

Work during the 1960s on the CB Pressurized Pod resulted in the standardization of the M51 Shelter System in 1971. The unit was an easily transportable, pressurized enclosure. It could be air-dropped or towed to provide protection from chemical and biological agents in the field for combat, combat support, and combat service support troops. The M51 was a double-walled, air-inflated, self-supporting shelter and airlock structure. When erected, the shelter was semicircular in cross-section with a maximum inside height of 7.5 ft, with inside dimensions of 15 x 14 ft. An airlock entrance (with a set of double doors at each end) on the front was 11 (1) x 4.2 (w) x 6.7 (h) ft in dimension. The filter and support equipment were mounted on a two-wheeled trailer.186...

As discussed in Chapter 2, most of the basic resources you will need are fairiy self-evident time of staff will almost certainly be the latgest single cost. Support expenses and travel also require funding. In addition, in the course of yourwork to date you may have identified specific resource requirements, such as computer software for hazard analysis or project management, or consulting services that fill in specific gaps in the knowledge base. 

Little has been written in the CAT literature about either the development of service infrastructure or the establishment of mutual self-help groups, although there is a wealth of literature which considers the role of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon which is of relevance here.38 As with service co-ordination, however, service development is not a task which the community team can undertake in isolation. The support received from service managers and planners is crucial in determining the extent to which such a role can be operationalised. 

The New England Document Conservation Center, or NEDCC, was founded six years ago by the New England Library Board, with the help of start-up funds from the Council on Library Resources. The purpose was to provide paper conservation services to libraries, historical organizations, and public records offices that could not afford in-house laboratories. The idea was that a shared resource could eliminate wasteful duplication of equipment and make available on a regional basis the skills of professional paper conservators. It was expected that after a start-up period, the Center would be self-supporting through fees for its services.
