Self, concepts

Most bulimic patients (60%-80%) have a lifetime history of depression (Braun et ah, 1994). They have problems with interpersonal relationships, self-concept, and impulsive behavior and show high levels of anxiety and compulsivity. Chemical dependency is not unusual in this disorder, alcohol abuse being the most common. Bulimics will abuse amphetamines to reduce their appetite and lose weight (Braun et ah, 1994). [Pg.594]

Ideally, the corporate center should focus on those key governance functions that allow it to create real value for the corporation, i.e., tasks with high value added or, if performed badly, high potential to destroy value. The definition of which tasks should be included will depend on the overall strategy and the center s self-conception, i.e., whether it defines its role more as that of a strategic architect or an operator (Fig. 24.2). [Pg.314]

Nonetheless, this team concluded from its experiments with DPT "that peak experiences may constitute an intrinsic element of effective psychotherapy for some persons and that "rapid therapeutic progress in the course of short-term psychotherapy with cancer patients... is indicated by this study. In a comment also pertinent for anyone considering use of DPT, they observed that "when a peak experience does occur, its continuing relevance for daily living may be strongly dependent on the degree to which the associated insights are assimilated or transferred into the everyday self-concept and world view of the patient. ... [Pg.423]

Not only Los Alamos, the Manhattan Project, Durrenmatt s play The Physicists have changed the (self-) conception of serious science or represent symbols for this change of mind-set. Science is responsible for what it realizes, discovers, and invents. It is responsible for the effects it has, for how it is used, and for what consequences it has for humankind. Science must leave the ivory tower of unprejudiced but responsibility free (if not irresponsible) knowledge. Earth has reached a point where science must assume responsibility for its further existence, where it must intervene. It is not just a question of not being allowed to do all we are able to do (contrary to the viewpoint of the American Christian Right, which claims that God has created the world in such a wonderful way that humankind will not be able to destroy it is disproved daily), but it is also a question of science, primarily natural science, making greater efforts than ever to explain what has been researched. Science must intervene - but those who want to intervene successfully must want to be understood. [Pg.50]

Phenethylamines are only one of many classes of chemicals which alter the activity levels of specific brain tissue. What sets phenethylamine compounds apart, is that some of the brain pathways whose activity they alter, affect uniquely human functions, such as cognition, the religious or aesthetic sentiments, the self-concept, fantasy, childhood memories, and the unconscious human psyche. [Pg.1145]

The intrinsic basis for motivation enhanced by transformational and charismatic leaders is emphasized in Shamir et al. s (1993) self-concept theory. Self-concepts are composed, in part, of identities. The higher the salience of an identity within the self-concept, the greater its motivational significance. Charismatic leaders achieve their transformational effects through implicating the self-concept of followers by the following four core processes ... [Pg.848]

The transition from a desire to satisfy solely personal interests to a desire to satisfy the broader collective interests is part of moral development, according to Kohlberg (1973). Bass (1985) places special emphasis on this aspect of moral development and suggests that transformational leaders get their employees to transcend their own self-interest for the sake of the team or organization. In Shamir s (1991) self-concept theory, the collectivistic orientation of the employees is one of the central transformational effects of charismatic leaders. Dvir et al. (in press) confirm the causal impact of transformational leaders on their direct followers collectivistic orientation. [Pg.853]
