Selenium tetrabromide

Soc., Dalton Trans., 1982, 851-857 In attempted preparation of poly(selenium nitride), the black solid formed by interaction with selenium tetrabromide in acetonitrile exploded violently within 1 min at 0°C. The solid produced from diselenium tetrachloride in acetonitrile exploded at around 100°C, and in dichloromethane the product exploded in contact with a nickel spatula.

Combination reactions occur with several nonmetals. With sulfur, it forms sulfur monobromide, S2Br2. With the addition of selenium, products are selenium monobromide, Se2Br2, and selenium tetrabromide, SeBr4. It yields unstable tellurium monobromide, Te2Br2, and a stable tetrabromide, TeBr4,with tellurium.

Selenium tetrabromide is a reddish-brown crystalline powder which decomposes to some extent on warming, giving bromine and the monobromide, but much sublimes unchanged. 

With the alkali bromides and alkyl ammonium bromides selenium tetrabromide can form crystalline additive compounds of the type MaSeBr6, termed selenibromides. Indeed, by the action of bromine on finely divided selenium in the presence of concentrated hydrobromic acid, a solution is obtained 4 which gradually deposits deep red crystals of hydrogen selenibromide, HaSeBr6. The solution of this body in hydrobromic acid on dilution with water undergoes decomposition with liberation of colloidal selenium. Two reactions probably occur concurrently ...

Selenium Trichlorobromide, SeCl3Br, Selenium Dichlorodi-bromide, SeCl2Br2, and Selenium Chlorotribromide, SeClBr3, have been described as yellow crystalline compounds, the first being obtained by the action of chlorine on selenium monobromide and the last by the action of bromine on selenium monochloride, while the intermediate body has been obtained by the action of chlorine on a mixture of selenium tetrabromide and monobromide.3...

The reaction very likely proceeds through the disproportionation of 4-ethoxyphenyl tellurium monochloride to tellurium and the diaryl tellurium dichloride. Bis[trifluoromethyl] tellurium transferred its trifluoromethyl groups to iodine, sulfur, selenium, phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony on heating with the elements, sulfur dichloride, selenium tetrabromide, or the triiodides of phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony at 170 to 220° in sealed tubes3. 

Selenium Tetrabromide. Selenium tetrabromide is mainly prepared by the reaction of the elements, either pure or dissolved in CS2, using an excess of bromine. It occurs in two crystalline modifications, the thermodynamically stable Q -SeBr4 and the metastable jS-SeBr4. The latter forms first, in accordance with Ostwald s rule.
