Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors death

Although tricyclics continue to be used today to treat childhood depression (Zito et ah, 2000), the use in children with ADHD has decreased, most likely because of its association with the sudden deaths of five children (Biederman, 1991). Furthermore, the Physician s Desk Reference (PDR) warns that MPH may inhibit the metabolism of tricyclics, but no such warning exists for DEX or (AMP). Due to the concern that children on this combination of medications are prone to develop more side effects, it is not a recommended form of treatment. Instead, MPH combined with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor is preferable for treating a child with ADHD and comorbid depression. [Pg.258]

Drug interactions hyperthermia, seizures, coma, and death with MAOIs serotonin syndrome with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors prevent anti-HTN effect of guanethidine and CNS-acting a2 agonists,... [Pg.167]

Fewer adverse effects were reported among moclobemide-treated patients compared with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)-treated patients. Since moclobemide does not induce orthostatic hypotension, does not possess anticholinergic properties, and is not cardiotoxic, it is very well suited among the MAOIs for the treatment of depression. Moclobemide has limited potential to elicit a hypertensive crisis, because the pressor effect of tyramine from food is only marginally potentiated compared with tranylcypromine. The pressor effect of tyramine is normalized within 3 days of cessation of treatment with moclobemide. The combination of SSRIs and moclobemide has good efficacy in cases of refractory depression, but there is controversy as to whether toxic side-effects such as serotonin syndrome can result from this combination. Currently, more studies are needed before this combination can be recommended. Acute overdose with MAOIs causes agitation, hallucinations, hyperpyrexia, hyperreflexia, convulsions, and death. The most dangerous MAOIs in overdose are the irreversible non-selective MAOIs. T2s-27... [Pg.47]

Toxicity Adverse effects include insomnia, mood changes, dyskinesias, gastrointestinal distress, and hypotension. Meperidine in combination with selegiline has caused agitation, delirium, and death. Selegiline has been implicated in the serotonin syndrome when used in patients taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (see Chapter 30). [Pg.254]

The Asian male client is prescribed fluoxetine (Prozac), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), for clinical depression after the death of his wife. Which question should the nurse ask the client when discussing this medication ... [Pg.319]

One of the main issues related to tramadol is the fact that it blocks serotonin reuptake and may cause serotonin syndrome in susceptible patients. Serotonin syndrome is characterized by neurological and cardiovascular stimulation, and can lead to seizures and death. Risks of developing serotonin syndrome are increased in patients treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. [Pg.139]

Because suicide is one of the leading causes of death in elderly people and in other populations, rapid and effective treatment of depression is warranted. Current therapies include the use of electroconvulsive (shock) therapy, psychiatric intervention, and antidepressant drugs such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Recently, in the U.S., the use of St. John s wort (Hypericum perforatum) has become more prevalent, especially in the treatment of depression. [Pg.415]
