Sediments monitoring

New sampling methods are also required for the monitoring of solid samples. The Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB) of Germany has developed devices for sampling suspended particulate matter and sediments. In both purposes, sampling and freezing are carried out in the field. For example, Fig. 15 shows the device used in sediment monitoring [48].

DeHenau and Matthijs (49) reported LAS sediment monitoring results from Germany (14 sites). Sediment concentrations of LAS were measured by HPLC-UV spectroscopy and were found to be dependent on the distance between sampling location and sewage-treatment-plant (STP) outfall. Measured concentrations ranged from a few milligrams per kilogram of dried sediment at 48 km downstream to a maximum of 275 mg/kg at only 1 km downstream from the STP effluent.

Regular (e.g., annual) sampling and analysis of surface sediments taken at selected sites. This has been, for instance, the approach used by the running national German sediment monitoring programme in the Baltic Sea since 1999 (BSH, 1999 BSH, 2005 ).

Besides research, useful activities concern networking of scientific experts, policy implementers and stakeholders in the framework of coordinated actions (e.g. ERA-NET) or networks of excellence. These have resulted in recommendations that are reflected in several chapters of this book, e.g. on sediment monitoring.
