Secondary electron microscope design

During the early years of electron microscopy, two scientists stand out because of their unorthodox approach to problem solving and instrument design. Their names are Max Knoll and Manfred von Ardenne. Only one year after he developed one of the first electron microscopes (25), Knoll was able to form images from the secondary electrons created by electron irradiation of metals and insulators... 

In the case of scanning Auger spectrometers, a secondary electron detector is placed close to the sample in order to collect the electrons used to generate secondary electron images. These detectors are of identical design to those found in scaiming electron microscopes (SEMs).
