However, several barbiturates, including phenobarbital (Luminal), secobarbital (Seconal), and pentobarbital (Nembutal), remain available and are occasionally used to treat epilepsy and rarely to manage acute alcohol withdrawal. 

Derivatives ofbarbiturie aeid viz., veronal, amytal, nembutal, luminal and seconal constitute an important class of tranquilizers. These derivatives are called barbiturates. Barbiturates are hypnotic, i.e., sleep producing agents. Some other substances used as tranquilizers are valium and serotonin.

Phenobarbital noticeably reduces the excitation of motor centers of the brain, and therefore is used in treating both minor and major epileptic attacks, chorea, and spastic paralysis. Luminal, adonal, seconal, and many others are synonyms for this drug.
