The dry gas seal has one of two types of barrier seal (seal between the bearing and dry gas seal) either a labyrinth or single or double carbon rings. Normally the seal system includes provision to supply buffer gas to the barrier seal, also known as a separation seal. The gas to this seal is referred to as separation gas. One reason for choosing the carbon ring style bander seal is to keep the separation gas usage to a minimum. The gas is normally nitrogen. The basic control is by a direct-operated pres sure control valve. 

If casing limitations are fixed by user-supplied relief valves, this information should be conveyed to keep the vendor from rating the compressors on other data. Evaluations can be more of a problem if the same design basis isn t universal with all vendors. The problem- points in high-pressure machines are certainly the dynamic shaft- and piston-or plunger seals. Seals create special problems when they slide rapidly under high-pressure and if the fluid being sealed has no lubricating actions. Cyclic stress creates additionally fatigue problems in the seal.

Seal-less pumps are becoming very popular and are widely used in the chemical industry. Mechanical seal problems account for most of the pump repairs in a chemical plant, with bearing failures a distant second. The absence of an external motor and a seal is appealing to those experienced with mechanical seal pumps. However, do not assume that just because there is no seal, seal-less pumps are always safer than pumps with seals, even with the advanced technology now available in seal-less pumps. Use seal-less pumps with considerable caution when handling hazardous or flammable liquids. 

Glasses which cannot be directly sealed together can be interconnected by means of graded seals. Seals having diameters of 7—9 mm. (O.D.) are commercially available. They consist of a series of very short tubes, each with a slightly different coefficient of expansion. In this way, even soft glass can be connected to quartz glass.
