Screw mixing and melting

Twin screw compounders or Buss Kneaders are used for fully mixed and melted compounds for injection molding because heat history has less effect on otyect molding as long as the process temperatures and times are adjusted to accormt for the use of lower molecular weight resins in the formulations. For flexible compounds, Banbury mixers, continuous mixers, or compounding extruders preceded by static mixers can be employed successfully. [Pg.411]

Polymer flow rate is kept constant when the screw processes occur stably. That is, the stability of solids conveying, melting, mixing, and melt pumping is necessary to maintain a uniform flow rate through the die. It is not uncommon, particularly with significant... [Pg.84]

Most thermoplastic materials are moulded by the process of injection moulding. In this process, the polymer is heated in a cylindrical chamber to a temperature at which it will flow and then it is forced in to a relatively cold, closed mould cavity by means of hydrolytically applied high pressure through a plunger or ram, but recently by means of a reciprocating screw that serves the dual purpose of providing the molten polymer mass and forcing it into the mould. The particulate polymer is picked up by the rotation of the screw, compressed and melted, the melt is mixed, and delivered to the entrance of the mould. The screw then moves forward to force a fixed volume of the molten polymer... [Pg.327]

In melt extrusion, polymer is forced to flow under shear along with helical screw direction, which divided into number of zones based on their functions and the requirement for processing specific combination such as feed section, mixing and melting section, and compression section and takes the shape of the die at the other end. In melt intercalation, biofiller can be directly mixed mechanically with the polymer melt to form a homogeneous mixture. Method is very widely used for thermoplastic nanocomposites and can be applied to nanobiocomposite. Melt intercalation is highly specific for a polymer, which may lead to new hybrids. Moreover, absence of solvent in the technique leads to industrially economical as well as environment friendly by waste point of view (Ray et al., 2005). [Pg.280]

This is necessary in order to mix and melt the material to produce a mixture that is both homogeneous and formable. This work is done by the extruder screw. [Pg.66]

Normal resin forward conveyance is accomplished by resin sticking to the hotter barrel wall and being pushed forward by the screw flights, while a circulating melt pool/pellet bed promotes mixing and melt homogeneity. [Pg.309]
