The effluents from the different quench boilers are first collected together. They undergo supplementary in-line cooling, and are then sent to a so-called primary fractionation columj whose bottom stream, itself previously cooled, serves for the direct quench operation. The external barrel is heated, which, together with frictional shear heating, softens the feed material. The material has a reduced viscosity due to the process and is quite deformable by the end of the screw where the die imparts the frnal shape to the profile. The most common feature of V-belts is their having a cross-section of the shape of a regular trapezium with the unparallel sides at an angle of 40° (Figure 2.77). The V-belts usually consist of five sections (1) the top section known as the tension section, (2) the bottom section, called the compression section, (3) the cord section located at the neutral zone, (4) the cushion section on either side of the cord section, and (5) one or two layers of rubberized fabric, called the jacket section covering the whole assembly. [Pg.257]

The channel depth decreases in the extruder compression section. Screws are designed with different numbers of turns of flight, and different compression ratios (the ratio of the channel depth in the feed section to that in the metering section) to suit the rheology of the polymer being extruded. The pressure generated here either squeezes out any gas bubbles, or causes gas to dissolve in the melt. Unless a foamed extrusion is required, bubbles must not be allowed to reform in the melt when it returns to atmospheric pressure after the die. Consequently, there may be a vent to the atmosphere or to a vacuum line just before the compression section to aid degassing. [Pg.146]

The melting process can be vmstable, with breaks occurring in the solid bed continuity. These cause pressure fluctuations at the die, and hence fluctuations in the volume output rate, which cause the pipe wall thickness to vary. Such fluctuations are more likely when the screw speed is increased the polymer residence time in the extruder can become insufficient for complete melting. Some screw designs place a barrier in the compression section that allows melt, but not granules, to pass the final metering section smoothes out any pressiu e variations. [Pg.146]
