Screw material

Injection molding is a cyclic discontinuous process used to form three-dimensional plastic parts (25. 26). Both thermoplastics and thermosets are injection molded. The process is shown schematically in Figure 11 for a reciprocating screw injection molder. This type of a machine has a screw rotating in a barrel similar to an extruder. However, here the melt flow is discontinuous and controlled via a check valve at the tip of the screw. Material is melted in the extruder, and the melt is accumulated in front of the screw tip until sufficient melt is at hand to fill the mold cavity (cavities). 

In four of the five formulations tested, HIDM samples showed marginally better dispersion levels in blown film than the twin screw materials. The single exception was MB-Yellow 1, where a dispersion rating of 40 was measured for the HIDM product. In contrast, the twin screw version of MB-Yellow 1 provided the best film dispersion quality noted during the trial.

Screws are made from good tool-grade steels or stainless steel. They are then treated, coated, or plated to reduce the coefficient of friction between screw and polymer, improve chemical resistance, improve abrasion resistance, and reduce wear. In high-wear areas, particularly the flight lands, special alloys are welded to the base steel of the screw. Screw materials are presented in Table 5.7. ... 

The details of screw design will be discussed Chapter 8. In the U. S., a very common screw material is 4140 steel, which is a medium carbon, relatively low-cost material. A table of common screw materials used in polymer extrusion with their chemical composition is shown in Table 3.4. Table 3.6 shows some physical properties and cost comparison data. The selection of the proper screw base material and hard-facing material will be discussed in detail in Section 11.2.1.4.

Comparing Figs. 11.17 and 11.18 it is clear that with the Monel screw higher temperatures occur in the feed section of the screw. This must be due to the thermal conductivity since this is the only difference between the two cases. These predictions confirm that a lower thermal conductivity of the screw material can lead to higher temperatures in the feed section of the screw. In the case of the Monel screw shown in Fig. 11.18, the screw temperatures in the feed section range from about 150to260°C (300 to 500°F).
