A semiautomated enzyme immunoassay was recently developed as a means to investigate the use of urine and bile as potential matrices for screening residues of sulfamethazine and sulfadiazine in swine (67). Urine was chosen as the screening matrix because sulfonamides are mainly excreted through this body fluid compared with urine, the levels of sulfonamides in plasma, serum, and bile drop relatively sharply after withdrawal. An extensive investigation was followed to compare the efficiency of sulfonamide-positive bile and urine at predicting sulfonamide-positive kidneys. It is very important to note that the screening matrix developed by the USEPA can only be used as a general guide. The critical step that ensures the success of a treatment process is gaining an understanding of the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of an indicator chemical compound within its class.

Many enzymes have been associated with carcinogenesis and metastasis. Elevated levels of certain enzymes may be associated with several different diseases or disorders. The two enzymes that we use in our bioactivity screens, matrix metalloproteinase-3 and caspase-1, have been associated with certain cancers and with certain immune disorders.
