Scoring power

More focused neuropsychological batteries have been developed for this purpose, such as those listed in Table 41.2. The HTV Denienda Scale is also a useful tool and only takes five minutes to administer and score (Power et al., 1995). It is important to remember that interpretation of neuropsychological tests also requires attention to patient demographics such as language skills, presence of comorbid conditions, substance abuse, and concomitant use of psychotropic medications. 

In France, local municipalities with one foul-smelling factory had the power to ban the construction of additional chemical plants. Napoleon also decreed that all factories emitting unpleasant odors should be rated according to the seriousness of the problem. When Leblanc factories got some of the worst scores, they were banned near human habitation. Later, however, both Leblanc and Lavoisier became French national heroes, martyrs of progress. Genetic linkage to nicotine dependence was examined in families from New Zealand, and regions on chromosomes 2, 4, 10, 16, 17 and 18 yielded small but positive lod scores [39]. These findings were not replicated in a study on families from the United States. All these studies were relatively small and it is probable they did not provide sufficient power to detect genes of small effect or those which influence risk in only a proportion of the families. 

First, the authors examined the distribution of total PCL-R scores using special probability graph paper (Harding, 1949). This method is a predecessor to mixture modeling it allows for estimation of taxon base rate, means, and standard deviations of latent distributions. The procedure suggested the presence of two latent distributions, with the hitmax at the PCL-R total score of 18. Harding s method is appropriate conceptually and simple computationally, but it became obsolete with the advent of powerful computers. On the other hand, there is no reason to believe that it was grossly inaccurate in this study. 

Projection of the variable space on to a plane (defined by two loading vectors) is a powerful approach to visualize the distribution of the objects in the variable space, which means detection of clusters and eventually outliers. Another aim of projection can be an optimal separation of given classes of objects. The score plot shows the result of a projection to a plane it is a scatter plot with a point for each object. The corresponding loading plot (with a point for each variable) indicates the relevance of the variables for certain object clusters. 

The PCA scores have a very powerful mathematical property. They are orthogonal to each other, and since the scores are usually centered, any two score vectors are uncorrelated, resulting in a zero correlation coefficient. No other rotation of the coordinate system except PCA has this property.
