The first chapter is dedicated to scientific word and text processing. Wipke describes the philosophy, purposes and abilities of word processors. The chapter is not written with the intent to promote a particular make of word processor, but to show the scientist what to look for when choosing a new product or evaluating an existing one. A careful reader will notice a subtle difference between the layout of the first and those of the rest of the chapters. In order to show the high quality manuscript that any chemist can produce in his or her own office without the assistance of artists, typists, editors, etc., Wipke has supplied his manuscript in camera-ready form made on a PC-based word processor, hence the minor differences. 

This last remark gives us the opportunity to develop what is perhaps one of the main criticisms against the use of the word aromaticity if we postulate that aromaticity is an intrinsic, mysterious, non-observable characteristic of the so-called aromatic compounds, it becomes obvious that all we can do is to collect the various answers provided by this myth to each of the external perturbations, and nobody can say whether the aromaticity scales so obtained will be consistent or not. Moreover, it must be added that each individual way subconsciously create a picture of the myth which is convenient for him. If one accepts this line of argument, it is clear that aromaticity is not a scientific word at all, but fundamentally an esthetic one (an assertion which is supported by the euphonious character of the word aromaticity). 

Trance is no longer common as a scientific word, pardy because it carries negative connotations, partly because it has never been clearly enough defined. A scientific technical word should be clearly descriptive of what phenomena are, without confusing what they are with what we feel about them. It is the negative connotations that concern us here.

First, many scientific word processing packages exist. Some can handle chemical structures. Examples (not necessarily chemically oriented) are ... 

To cover the specialized area of chemical structures in detail, authors could provide only cursory coverage of mathematical expressions and tabular material. Many of the scientific word processing packages that I mentioned and some software the book discusses in detail (especially ChemText from Molecular Design Limited) will handle scientific and graphics material other than chemical structures. This book does not cover well-known graphics systems that handle chemical structures or chemical reactions these systems are already well-documented (6, 7).

There are two broad areas of meaning of a word. The denotation is the dictionary meaning of the word. The connotation is the emotional overtone that amplifies the denotation. Scientific words are defined to remove connotations from scientific terms in an attempt to make them neutral and emotion free. 

Scientific language is institutionalized within a community and is governed by the rules of those who use the words. However, people outside the scientific community may take scientific words and redefine their denotation or change their connotation. The term acid rain when used in a newspaper article may conjure up the image of rain that corrodes buildings to a pile of dust and dissolves plants. 

One of the reasons why Mathcad has become popular is that a user can insert operators or functions into a worksheets depending which he may have got accustomed to when learning mathematics in school. This makes the Mathcad worksheet looks like a technical paper with calculations made by hand or in a text processor environment (Scientific Word, ChiWriter, etc.).

Use new terms at the right dose It is important not to introduce too much technical terms at once. In some lessons more than 10 new scientific words are presented to the students. Before implementing new words, it is important to ask yourself are really all the new scientific terms necessary and how often will they be used in the following lessons ... 

Picture story. In a picture story (Figure 3) the pictures are supported by speech bubbles. The picture story can be given as a whole, or some parts or speech balloons of the picture can be missing. Using speech balloons can help to reduce the demand on the students. This method is very attractive for students because it is short, concise, and taken from students life. Students are familiar with speech balloon from comics. They can be allowed to use their everyday language, simple sentences, and non-scientific words here. 

At the end of each chapter a set of updated references are included with the aim of providing key scientific material usefnl to expand knowledge. Additionally, each chapter contains a section consisting of selected questions aimed toward the self-evalnation of the comprehension of the contents. Finally, a glossary with approximately 600 words is inclnded at the end to help in the understanding of technical and scientific words nsed throughout the book.
