IN this chapter we shall develop a rather more general conception of the application of the older laws of thermodynamics and of the new Heat Theorem. We shall limit ourselves essentially to condensed systems we have dealt with gases sufficiently fully in Chapters X and XIII. Moreover, for anyone who accepts the theory of degeneration described in the previous chapter there is no longer any difference, as far as the application of our Heat Theorem is concerned, between condensed and gaseous systems. The substance of the following discussion may be found in a paper (93) laid before the Prussian Academy of Sciences in 1913.

It therefore seemed timely to arrange a joint U.S.-Japan Seminar on the topic of asymmetric reactions and processes— the title including not only asymmetric syntheses, both conventional chemical and enzymatic, but also certain separation methods involving the same kind of diastereo-meric interactions that are involved in asymmetric synthesis. The seminar was held July 7-11, 1981, at Stanford University with the editors and Professor Harry S. Mosher as co-organizers. It was supported jointly by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the National Science Foundation and featured 19 plenary speakers nine from Japan and ten from the United States. The names and brief biographies of all but one of these speakers are given on pp. xi-xiii, and their subjects are listed in the Table of Contents.

The QSCP-XIII workshop, which was the first in the series held in North America, was truly international in namre. We welcomed more than 100 participants from 22 countries from North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The workshop was divided into 19 plenary sessions, during which a total of 64 scientific lectures were delivered in accordance with the usual QSCP democratic allocation of about 30 minutes for each lecture. These lectures were complemented by two 45-minute long keynote plenary talks which focused on science and relevant historical overviews, constimting a special session that was held on 6 July, as well as by a welcome presentation by Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at Michigan State University, J. Ian Gray, given on 7 July, and 36 poster presentations divided into two poster sessions.
