Further improvements have been achieved using thiolated and non-thiolated hydro)g apatite-coated crab-tendon chitosan (t-chitosan/HAP-SH and t-chitosan/HAP, respectively) tubes, with and without a conjugated laminin peptide sequence (YIGSR). Laminin-1 is considered to be one of the most important cell adhesion molecules, and a pentapeptide sequence (YIGSR) located at its B1 domain is believed to enhance Schwann-cell migration and attachment, as well as neural outgrowth. 

The most important obstacles to drug migration across the axon are the Schwann cell and the myelin sheath. The structure of a mixed peripheral nerve means that access of a local anaesthetic to the core fibres is delayed relative to the outer fibres. This explains the differences in onset times between proximal and distal dermatomes.

As mentioned above, Schwann cells are indispensable not only for the process of axonal regeneration but also for the subsequent myelination and maintenance of physiological function. Similar molecular interactions as with neurons should therefore allow migration of Schwann cells from the host into the nerve bridge.
