School Evacuations

Train school bus drivers on interacting with public safety officials aboard buses, at accident scenes, in on-road emergencies, and when emergency situations exist at schools. Include protocols for dealing with school evacuations, student release procedures, family reunification issues, and associated matters. 

People are less willing to threaten the safety of younger people. School-age youngsters and babies are particularly important because they are viewed as the endowment of our future. Older people are also a special concern if they are not able to protect themselves (e.g., evacuate the area) without assistance. 

All my teachers and my coach understand that I m chemically sensitive. The nurse at our school has educated them. So they look out for me, and let me know if they re going to use something that might bother me. That helps, because I don t like to advertise that I m chemically sensitive. I don t like to draw too much attention to myself. But I will speak up and take care of myself when I need to. I won t sit there and let stuff happen to me. If someone is going to use a product that is not safe for me, I ll evacuate the area. I ve had to learn how to speak up for myself. My mom pushed me into it because, when she sent me off to school, she had to trust me with... 

In April 1995, an explosion and fire at Napp Technologies, in Lodi, New Jersey, killed five employees, injured several others, destroyed a majority of the facility, significantly damaged nearby businesses, and resulted in the evacuation of 300 residents from their homes and a school (USEPA-OSHA, 1997). Additionally, firefighting generated chemically contaminated water that ran off into a river. The property damage exceeded 20 million. 

In the cities along the Songhua River and the Amur River, water supplies were suspended durting the period that the toxic slick passed by. For example, water supply in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang, with more than three million urban residents, was suspended for four days, school was closed for a week and some residents evacuated from the city. 

Even where the National Socialists plans regarding the future of the Jews in their sphere of influence up to mid-1941 are concerned, there certainly are similarities in the views held by the Revisionist and the so-called functionalist school of historians. In light of the actual policies of the National Socialists, M. Broszat pointed out in 1977 that, aside from verbal threats on Hitler s part, there is no evidence in political events until mid-1941 for any National Socialist plans for extermination. Rather, documents as well as the actual results of Hitler s policies proved that until October and November 1941 all measures were aimed at removing the Jews from the German sphere of influence by means of resettlement.96 In this respect, the contemporaneous documents which mention evacuation, deportation, resettlement etc. of the Jews are in no way examples of a code language they simply say exactly what they mean. This view was recently supported by Jerusalem historian Yehuda Bauer.97... 

Accidental release of MIC can happen wherever the chemical is stored. A minor leak occurred from the Union Carbide plant in West Virginia only a few months after the Bhopal disaster and a nearby school had to be evacuated. Exposure to MIC at higher concentrations and for a longer duration than happened in Bhopal can also occur and can be fatal to a substantially greater percentage of population regardless of where it happens. Since children spend the majority of the day at school, community preparation for a threat must include the local educational system. Development of a rapid evacuation plan and the establishment of in-school shelters are critical. Schools can play a valuable role for the management of pediatric casualties. 

Know your school s fire-evacuation routes. 

Chard Coroner s Court was told how police broke into the house after a suicide note was seen on the door. Police and paramedics were overcome by the fumes and had to be taken to hospital. Neighbours and a nearby school were evacuated.
