Scapula

Schulter,/. shoulder, -blatt, n. shoulder blade, scapula. [Pg.397]

Approximately two-thirds of all pressure sores occur on the sacrum and heels. The remaining third occur predominately on the elbows, ankles, trochanters, ischia, knees, scapulas, shoulders, or occiput.35 Pressure sores are classified according to the extent of tissue destruction.40 The staging of pressure sores is presented in Table 70-7. [Pg.1084]

Marked treatment related increase in the occurrence of a specific alteration, in which the form is not predictive of the normal chronological order of development (e.g., bent scapula). [Pg.265]

Because the rate of the ETC increases, with no ATP synthesis, energy is released as heat. Important uncouplers include 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) and aspirin (and other salicylates). Brown adipose tissue contains a natural uncoupling protein (UCP, formerly called thernio-genin), which allows energy loss as heat to maintain a basal temperature around the kidneys, neck, breastplate, and scapulae in newborns. [Pg.185]

Two-year studies were conducted by administering VCD in acetone by dermal application 5 days per week for over 100 weeks to groups of rats of each sex at 0, 15, or 30mg/animal and to groups of mice at 0, 2.5, 5, or lOmg/animal. Acanthosis and sebaceous gland hypertrophy of skin from the scapula were observed at increased incidences in both species. Squamous cell papillomas in male rats and squamous cell carcinomas in males and females were observed in exposed rats at an increased incidence. The combined incidence of basal cell adenomas or carcinomas was also increased in both sexes. Squamous cell carcinomas were found in the exposed mice. Follicular atrophy and tubular hyperplasia of the... [Pg.735]

CD Patients with smaller neck muscle mass and patients who require bilateral injections into the sternocleidomastoid muscle have been reported to be at greater risk for dysphagia. Limiting the dose injected into the sternocleidomastoid muscle may reduce the occurrence of dysphagia. Injections into the levator scapulae may be associated with an increased risk of upper respiratory tract infection and dysphagia. [Pg.1343]

Remove right forelimb (clavicle remains with axial skeleton), and examine scapula including tuberositas delteoidea, humerus, radius, ulna, metacarpals, and phalanges from all aspects. [Pg.218]

Alprostadil infusion can produce bone cortical hyperostosis. Periosteal changes have been described in 15 neonates after the administration of alprostadil for more than 1 week (10). Serum alkaline phosphatase activity was significantly raised. The long bones and clavicles were most commonly involved and symmetrically affected. The scapula was involved in two cases and the ribs in seven. The involvement of clavicles has not been previously reported. [Pg.114]

FSHD is the third most common hereditary muscular dystrophy after Duchenne muscular dystrophy and myotonic dystrophy. As its name represents, the disease predominantly affects the face, the scapulae, and the proximal arm muscles. In... [Pg.409]

Coracoid—bone or cartilage projecting from the scapula toward the sternum. [Pg.416]

The possibilities that cryptic prostatic carcinoma may coexist with other diseases or that a high serum alkaline phosphatase activity possesses some residual activity at pH 5.0 tend to be negated by an analysis of these five patients. One female with carcinoma of the breast and osteolytic metastases of the femur, pelvis, and spine had an elevated serum acid phosphatase activity of 4.2 K.A. units, and a second female with an unknown primary but with osteolytic lesions of the ribs and scapula had an activity of 4.1 K.A. units. The serum alkaline phosphatase activities were 17.8 Bodansky units in the first case and 5.2 Bodansky units in the second case, both above 4.2 Bodansky units, the upper limit of normal values by this method. [Pg.116]

A number of different sites have been used to apply the pinch. The most commonly used site is over the triceps muscle of the arm. Hence, the site is called the "triceps skinfold" site. The measurement is taken halfway between two bones, the scapula and ulna. More specifically, the measurement is taken halfway between the acromion process of the scapula and the otecranon process of the ulna (Figure 7.9). A picture of a dietician taking a triceps skinfold measurement is shown in Figure 7,9. [Pg.394]

Locate the acromion process of the scapula and the deltoid. Measure two to three fingers below the acromion process on the lateral midline of the arm to identify the proper site. Inject at a 90-degree angle. [Pg.66]
