Automation of Screening Methods for Low Molecular Weight Substances 

Thin layer chromatography, as was previously mentioned, has been automated, with the main emphasis on drug detection. However, it seems reasonable to expect this system to be able to handle carbohydrate and amino acid detection as well, and this would have a practical impact on mass screening for genetic variants. 

Automation of gas-liquid chromatography, including sample extraction, has recently been introduced it also has had as its main emphasis the screening for drugs of abuse. However, the system appears to be flexible enough to perhaps allow automated analysis of other urinary or serum and plasma components, such as steroids, that would have some bearing on genetic variation.
