While there are some real problems to be solved which involve residues, insect resistance to insecticides is the really big problem. Curiously, the opponents of pesticides fail to measure it in its full dimensions. Resistance of insects to insecticides is a truly growing problem. As long ago as 1908 the repeated use of lime-sulfur sprays in orchards in Clarkson Valley, Washington, selected out a resistant strain of the San Jose scale, which spread and reached southern Illinois orchards in 1920. In principle avian exposnre conld be modeled at very hne levels of spatial and temporal scale e.g., estimating residnes of pesticides on individnal seeds and insects and then modeling individnal choices of a bird feeding on them — an analysis in nnits of centimeters and seconds. Sulfur-Based Pesticides. Sulfur (elemental) has been used as an effective acaricide, fungicide, and insecticide. For ease of use, a number of special formulations are available, ranging from sulfur dusts (up to 95% sulfur) a wettable powder (30 to 90%) and paste-like solutions in which the sulfur is ground to a fine colloidal form. Such formulations may contain up to 50% sulfur. Target plant diseases of sulfur when used as a fungicide include apple scab, brown rot. downy and powdery mildew, and peach scab. Against insects, sulfur is effective for mite, scale, and tJirip. Most formulations are not injurious to honeybees. [Pg.1575]

Aldrin and dieldrin have never been produced industrially in China but were produced on a pilot scale for termite control. Endrin has never been produced in China.
