Sauer River

By the end of January 1945 the Allies had regained the ground lost during the enemy s Ardennes offensive. In February the 12th Army Group prepared for attack along the Roer and Sauer Rivers, an attack whose impetus would carry to the Rhine. This latter obstacle, the last great defensive barrier for the enemy, was surmounted in March. After that, victory was but a matter of time. [Pg.484]

The Our River branched off from the Sauer River about ten miles or so below the town of Echternach, making the two, in effect, a continuous waterway. [Pg.485]

Hexachlorobutadiene has been detected in some surface waters but the incidence of detection is low. It was detected in 0.2% of 593 ambient water samples in the STORE database with a median level for all samples of less than 10 ppb (Staples et al. 1985). Hexachlorobutadiene was detected in 1 of 204 surface water sites sampled across the United States with a concentration of 22 ppb (Ewing et al. 1977). Low levels of hexachlorobutadiene were detected in the Niagara River at 0.82 ppt (Oliver and Charlton 1984). Hexachlorobutadiene was not detected in rainwater (Pankow et al. 1984) or urban storm water runoff (Cole et al. 1984) in a number of U.S. cities. It has not been detected in open ocean waters however, the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico were reported to contain 3-15 ppt (Sauer 1981). [Pg.81]

Much of the fighting of February and March Involved river crossings. The Roer, the Erft, the Sauer, the Moselle, the Rhine—these were the larger rivers which blocked the American forces in their drive to the east. The chemical mortar battalions, by both smoke and high explosive missions, provided valuable support in this series of important operations. [Pg.484]

As evidence of the severity of fighting against the obstacles of the Sauer and Our Rivers and the Siegfried Line, the companies of the 91st fired for five days from their initial positions.
