San Onofre Nuclear Power

Demonstration of the copper model on a case of practical interest was undertaken by considering a hypothetical slug release of ionic copper through the outfall of Unit One of the San Onofre Nuclear Power Station on the Southern California coast.

In the United States, a comprehensive review was ordered of the safety of all of the nuclear power plants operating in the United States. Of particular concern are the Diablo Canyon and San Onofre nuclear power plants that straddle the San Andreas Fault in Cahfornia.

The first incident to attract attention was the fire in the San Onofre cable trays (FRPJ). This was followed by spontiiiieous combustion of uncured polyurethane foam in the cable seals at Peach Bottom 1 (1971). Accordingly, Inspection and Enforcement Bulletin No. 83-04" was issued on March 11, 1983, to all pressurized water nuclear power reactor facilities holding an operating license except those with Westinghouse DB type breakers for action and to other nuclear power reactor facilities for information. The Bulletin described the San Onofre events and mentioned that similar events involving the General Electric AK-2 type breakers had previously occurred at Arkansas Unit 1, Crystal River Unit 3, Oconee Units 1 and 3, Three Mile Island Unit 1, St. Lucie Unit 1, and Rancho Seco Unit 1.
