A classical inlet system is used to obtain a fast response and to avoid mass fractionation. The gas to be sampled impinges on a capillary (150 pm I.D.) discharging into a small chamber (lmL) held at 102 Pa by an auxiliary pump. The most popular thermionic detector (TID) is the nitrogen-phosphorus detector (NPD). The NPD is specific for compounds containing nitrogen or phosphorus. The detector uses a thermionic emission source in the form of a bead or cylinder composed of a ceramic material impregnated with an alkyl-metal. The sample impinges on the electrically heated and now molten potassium and rubidium metal salts of the active element. Samples which contain N or P are ionized and the resulting current measured. In this mode, the detector is usually operated at 600-800°C with hydrogen flows about 10 times less than those used for flame-ionization detection (FID). [Pg.308]

A tremendous amount of work has been done to delineate the detailed reaction mechanisms for many catalytic reactions on well characterized surfaces [1, 45]. Many of tiiese studies involved impinging molecules onto surfaces at relatively low pressures, and then interrogating the surfaces in vacuum with surface science teclmiques. For example, a usefiil technique for catalytic studies is TPD, as the reactants can be adsorbed onto the sample in one step, and the products fonned in a second step when the sample is heated. Note that catalytic surface studies have also been perfonned by reacting samples in a high-pressure cell, and then returning them to vacuum for measurement. [Pg.302]

The part that marries the plasma to the mass spectrometer in ICPMS is the interfacial region. This is where the 6000° C argon plasma couples to the mass spectrometer. The interface must transport ions from the atmospheric pressure of the plasma to the 10 bar pressures within the mass spectrometer. This is accomplished using an expansion chamber with an intermediate pressure. The expansion chamber consists of two cones, a sample cone upon which the plasma flame impinges and a skimmer cone.
