The early chapters (1-5) are fairly basic. They cover data description (mean, median, mode, standard deviation and quartile values) and introduce the problem of describing uncertainty due to sampling error (SEM and 95 per cent confidence interval for the mean). In theory, much of this should be familiar from secondary education, but in the author s experience, the reality is that many new students cannot (for example) calculate the median for a small data set. We will describe an accurate statistical method that includes a full assessment of error in the overall calibration process, that is, (I) the confidence interval around the graph, (2) an error band around unknown responses, and finally (3) the estimated amount intervals. The classical, frequentist approach in statistics requires the concept of the sampling distribution of an estimator. In classical statistics, a data set is commonly treated as a random sample from a population. Of course, in some situations the data actually have been collected according to a probability-sampling scheme. Whether that is the case or not, processes generating the data will be snbject to stochastic-ity and variation, which is a sonrce of uncertainty in nse of the data. Therefore, sampling concepts may be invoked in order to provide a model that accounts for the random processes, and that will lead to confidence intervals or standard errors. The population may or may not be conceived as a finite set of individnals. In some situations, such as when forecasting a fnture value, a continuous probability distribution plays the role of the popnlation. [Pg.37]

A meta-analysis for continuous data cannot be calculated unless the pertinent standard deviations are known. Unfortunately, clinical reports often give the sample size and mean ratings for the various groups but do not report the standard deviations (or standard error of the mean), which are necessary for effect size calculations. Thus, investigators should always report the indices of variability (e.g., confidence intervals, SDs) for the critical variables related to their primary hypothesis. [Pg.27]

Quantitative methodology uses large or relatively large samples of subjects (as a rule students) and tests or questionnaires to which the subjects answer. Results are treated by statistical analysis, by means of a variety of parametric methods (when we have continuous data at the interval or at the ratio scale) or nonparametric methods (when we have categorical data at the nominal or at the ordinal scale) (30). Data are usually treated by standard commercial statistical packages. Tests and questionnaires have to satisfy the criteria for content and construct validity (this is analogous to lack of systematic errors in measurement), and for reliability (this controls for random errors) (31). [Pg.79]
